Another 'from scratch' Ps7 piece. Took a while to figure it out.

Thanks for all the great comments...it is highly appreciated.
It's kind of hard to describe how I did this, as it was all on the fly...a lot of experiments.
There is a lot of use of the pen tool...Photoshop's vector drawing tool. It's hard to control (a bit like sculpting with jello), but it can draw perfect lines and curves, since it dosent use pixels.
Also makes clean, near perfect selections for cut and paste.
There is also a lot of layers(about 150), layer modes and layer style effects.
Its a lot more difficult to explain then it is to do.
Manuals and tutorials confuse the hell out of me, so I've learned from experimenting, which is the best way to go with this program...things start to make sense after a while...I can even get through a tutorial now.
Again...thanx for the comments...makes me want to do more.

ya ive been using photoshop myself for about 2 years. just now gettin used to the pen tool. my problem with it is i cant create the feathered looking edges well. any particular way you did that? if its mostly pen tool then jeeeeeeez thats some heavy detail. How many hours do you figure you spent on it? like 50 or somethin?

zorch - your stuff is great!

the pen tool is possibly the best innovation for digital art, ever ... it imitates the long process required in airbrushing of using the X-acto to cut out necessary stencils to airbrush in/around ...

i guess that's how i got started with the pen tool ... i took an airbrushing class and noticed the similarities ... it does take a long time to master, but with grips of practice it becomes second nature, and suddenly the whole world becomes linework ...

Thanx again for the great input..
SgtBob ....there are a lot of ways to get that 'feathered'look...but here is a really good way...

First of all...make sure the image you want to 'feather' is on a layer of its own.
In the layers pallete...there will be a box titled 'opacity' which is set to 100%
Set it somewhere between 85-95%
The image will keep its solidity, but allow the background(which will be under the layer) to slightly show through, making the image truer to the overall picture...it also loses the sharp edges.

A good extra touch would be...
layer/matting/defringe
This will get rid of stray jagged black and white pixels at the edges, giving it a less 'pasted' look.

Other options...
Go over the rough edges with the blur tool set at about 25%
Or the eraser tool set to about 10-20%
Use the dodge and burn tools to lighten or darken the image to match the background.
These are just a few ways...there are plenty of them, but I use these the most.

The standard way to feather an image is...
1. Select the image.
2. Go to select/feather
3. a box will pop up asking you how many pixels you want to feather.
4. For a light feather..type in 1-3 pixels
5. copy the selection.
6. Paste into a new layer...the new image will be feathered..discard the old one.
this works good, but can leave a slightly blurry or smudged look sometimes...that is why I prefer other ways.
Hope this makes sense and is useful.

I have been messing around with PSP and PS for a couple years now. Im a bit rusty as we speak, but I make alot of custom textures for 3d shooters as I am a mapper for games as far back as Quake. Anyone else play 3d shooters from quake (1-3) or halflife, unreal, etc? I am about to embark upon Doom 3 editing as I am getting my new computer tomorrow that will finally run it. I suck at drawing, but 3d architectural design is what I love and am good at.
