a friend is having trouble spawning dung with colonized grain. first he past. dung for 1.5-2hrs @ 160-180 deg., then lets drain for 24-48 hrs, then under sterile conditions mixes the two (grain/dung) in a container, covers with foil, and pokes holes..then lets sit to colonize ...... but, .he's been getting lots of contams before it 100% colonizes...should he even poke holes?? if he doesn't poke holes how will it get o2 ?? what about fanning? he hasn't been fanning should he? please help. thanx.

Sucess is more likely if you sterilize gallon jars or fill up autoclavable bags with dung and innoculate with grain under sterile conditions.

This is the way i do it! Pasturise 4# for 1? hrs...let drain for 5-6 hours..your supposed to barley squeese out some H20 from the dung..mix 1 pint of BRF-cakes 100% colonized + dung in a sterile bowl...put in a sterile plastic bag..poke some holes with a fork..tie the bag up..Put in a paperbag, fold gently..Keep varm and dark..No fanning..Works great.. Peace stonErollEr

May also want to try LESS pasteurization, the best-colonizing dung I've ever seen also had a seedling or two that sprouted. Prepared as follows: Pour boiling water over crispy-dry road apples, let hydrate for an afternoon or overnight. Done. Squeeze like you would a wet dishrag you're about to use to wipe off a countertop. Make sure the moisture content is good, or else the 'friendly flora' will not be so friendly.
