I think racism was the main reason they became illegal, but it's not so much anymore the reason why it remains illegal.

I think greed and money and politics play a lot into many substance's current legality. Many senators have openly admitted that they think the drug laws are draconian and old, but fear the response they would get if a few of them started going on about how maybe drugs aren't so bad.

For example, Nixon was elected in large part because of his platform of being tough on crime. He created the largest research group ever in American history to study the effects of marijuana (Schaffer Commission). When the leader of the study told him that the report was in fact not all bad, Nixon declared that no matter what the result of the study was, he was going to declare war against drugs (or maybe this was Reagan?). So the Schaffer Commission took several years and researched the hell out of marijuana, from medical, societal, political, and international perspectives, and concluded that marijuana should not remain illegal.

Then later, in the late 80's, the DEA held legal hearings at the possibility of rescheduling marijuana. (The suit was difficult to create...under the CSA, parties can petition for rescheduling of any substance, and the DEA must formally consider the request. NORML and 13 people with medical conditions went through the steps to move weed to Sched. 2. It took three lawsuits and two direct court orders to force the DEA to hold the hearings.)

All sorts of people, from patients, to doctors specializing in every body part, to medical journals, to research scientists testified in favor of moving it to sched 2, and the DEA had a few heartless doc's who repeated the prohibition mantras against pot.

In the end, the DEA judge ruled IN FAVOR of them and declared that pot should become sched. 2. However, such enlightened thinking could not be allowed to stand. The head of the DEA simply rejected his own judge's ruling and it's been the same ever since.

The Laguardia Report which predates Nixon's administration already pointed out that there were no serious negative health effects from marijuana. If hemp were to be legalized, it would also invariably include industrial hemp and its mulititude of useful and much more economical applications which would undermind the vast petroleum industry which has a great influence on politics regarding industrial commerce. So I guess in that sense it has grown into a different reason as to why marijuana remains illegal. However, in the eye of the general (and naive) public the demonization of marijuana stems from the earlier propaganda which grew from the black and white equality struggle.

And if ever does become legalized, you can bet I'll be getting a pack of joints at the local CVS. Who grows their own tobacco?

That wouldn't explain why stimulants like meth and cocaine are illegal. In fact, cocaine used to be distributed to workers so they could work longer hours without rest.

Also, alcohol is legal for the simple reason that it's been an integral part of western culture since the dawn of civilization. Tobacco I can't really explain.

Those saying it's racism are largely correct. Marijuana was associated with Mexican immigrants. Cocaine with Southern blacks. Opium with the Chinese. It wasn't so much the fact that these cultures used these drugs that scared prohibitionists. It was the daunting fear that they would "corrupt" their white children and take away their innocence.

Then of course psychedelics were prohibited because the peace movement with which they were associated was too much of a threat for old Dick Nixon.

And then after the CIA LSD experiments to create a "super soldier" failed.. and it was discovered that it opens minds instead of bending them to your will.. the lies began to spread far and wide..

And of course the same with MDMA and so on. It's hard to kill the enemy when you are one with them.

adderall=amphetamine, only difference in that and meth is the methyl group component, which is responsible for crystal to kick in fast, whereas adderall lasts 12 hours. Same chemical, only rearranged.

What I meant by that comment was if pot was legalized I don't think too many people would go through the trouble of growing their own pot.(not saying that some will) Im sure that whatever companies would produce the joints would compete for having the best, to our advantage; as in the current tobacco industry. As far as tobacco goes, we produce the best quality here in the states; and if you want proof smoke French cigarettes :sad:
