Hi everyone, ok heres the dilima , a foaf of mine is in his first attepmt at farming some soul food , prosess is at day 9 . he is trying 2 different strains consectutively for attepmt #1 , eq's and gt's. At day 3 first signs of mycelum growth , verry small whiteish porsions forming, Gt's were showing more growth responce incomparison to the eq' s but were also inocculated 1 day b4 the eqs, this continued steadily until day 6 and that was when the eq's growth had surpassed and allmost more then doubled the gt's mycelum growth, 1 difference that can be rembered at day 1 (innoculation) when making syringes out of prints , the gt's spores when they hit water it took vigous stirring and chopping of the syringes needle to break the spores up . when making the eq's syringe the following day as soon as the spores hit the water instantly a purplish dark cloud spread through the water . For each syringe that was used equal amounts from the prints were added . The foafs sterilzation method was the tin foil / boiling method , which was done by pf tek guidelines and followed to a T. 1 thing he can note of not doing was covering the holes with tape , ( never said in the pf tek) , when innoculating the jars he allso used large amounts of innoc per site ( 1cc) (4cc perJ) which was why holes werent covered do to excess added moisture content to the cakes the substrtate that was used was a verm/brn rice flour mix . and all steps were closely folowed by the pf tek guidelines.incubation environment is a lightless box with heating blanket below with temps directly underneath the jars of 84-86 and floor open temp of 78-80 , with humidity around 30% nautraly. everything was staying at a floored steady pace up until present , day 9 , he just reciently opened the seal on the lids to try and allow extra moisture to release and provide a better gas excahnge , basicly he unscrewed the ring and took off the VERRY slowly lifted seal from jar all they way around then after a VERRY SMALL breath ( just long enough to open and close) He put seals back on and screwed the rings on verry loosly. When he opened the lids he noticed verry small water droplets forming on the top of lid. 3-4 of the eq cakes are allmost completly covered with there starting layer along with the other 2-3 cakes catching up . for the gt's only about the nicest 3 are at 85-90% covered with there starting layer. much slower rate then the eq's . another thing noticed today when he was opening each glass he noticed for both strains that the mycelum was spurting through the top dry verm layer and spreading though that also , gt's showing more of this then eq's , now to the delimma , on 1 jar around where the wet layer and dry layer meet there is an area that is about 1-2 cm tall and about 1 1/2 in long , that is dark greyish/blackish in color. he rechecked all the jars and this is only sign and only jar , i would deeply appriciate any help or advise that is provided , and was wondering if possible the mycelum if left could fight it out , and also could that jar contam all others if left in same incubator , another question i had was the comparson to growing 2 different strains together in 1 terraium or in 2 seperate smaller ones which would be best for the shrooms. 1 other question was about how long after the fisrt covering layer of mycelum copmpletly covers the jar how much longer should you let in stay in the jar , hes trying to let them stay a little longer then suggested to allow the network to be able to fully divelop b4 birthing.Due to this being his first attempt his fealings are verry worry strucken , im shure you peeps can understand when you first made you attempts , i might be overacting , or i could just be being careful and cautious . Thx for taking the time to read my post and thx for all help that is provided. o ya please post any good info sites for deep info and pics of different strains, thx again for everything.
P.S. THIS BOARD KICKS @$$ , I am learning alot of great wisdom thx to you people , thx a million.

Water drops in the jars are fine.
The jar sounds like it's contaminated. throw it out.
Personnally, I wait til I see pinning in the jars before birthing. But everyone will give a different answer to that.
Air exchange is good, but only when the jars are fairly well colonized.
Right now for cakes, I have two small pet terrariums I stole from the kids. they work fine. Ive got B+ and PESAs in with each other.

Don't worry about it man. Your jars sound like they are doing just perfectly. As far as the one with the blackish coloring, throw it out. Throw out any jar that smells funny or begins to show funny coloring. You can never be too careful... are those extra few grams of shrooms worth the risk?
I personally find that the best results come when you birth the cakes 3-4 days after they seem to be fully colonized. Some strains do not like to start pinning in the jars, so if you wait for pinning and the conditions are not right for them, you could be waiting till they die. Also, I highly recommend the internal resevoir tek, wich can be found in the growing section of this web page. Have fun growing :-)
