Slacklining!
    #4422459 - 07/19/05 08:22 AM (11 years, 4 months ago)

Anyone here tried it? You should, it's really fun! :crazy2:
I started practicing a week ago, I've only managed a few steps so far but I'm making progress every day...

(Slacklining is tightrope walking on a line with slack)

(that is not me in the picture)

I use 1" flat line (tubular webbing) too, I think most people do.

Don't know if Sharma highlines without protection, but I'm sure some people do. Dean Potter maybe?

I know I wouldn't...

How high was your line set up?

maybe 4-5 foot without anyone on it.....

with me(about 130lbs) it would be about 1 foot or so off the ground....

That's about the same height as I'm using. Have you tried anything higher? I'm thinking about setting higher line (maybe 10 feet with weight on) over water once I'm a little better.

naw,i stopped using it after a while,i still will unwrap it on occasion,if people want to try.....

funy you mention water....i was at a dock that had cable lines running a good 15-20 feet to the land from the corner of the dock.....

i tried it...needless to say i got about 5 feet and "got wet"....i think it kinda messes with your concentration....

 Kudos for trying it!

Do you have any tips for a beginner that you might want to share?

haha,i'm pretty much a begginer too....

i very uncharacteristicly didn't read much into it,just saw  Sharma or some nut doin' it without safty lines, and said"i gotta try that".....

the first many times i "got it going" i was using big logs,i was making into didges, for a balance rod(like tight rope)....

that seemed to help alot,it;s easier to learn to stop using the stick, than to just jump on....

and yea, don't jump on the things,haha....

if your a climber or anything, you could grab some Static-rope(no strech) as a "guide" ,kinda like a handrail on both sides(rather too elaborate for my taste,haha)...

i think the stick is the best though....

that and start low, always be low,but start real low...almost sitting on your leg,and slowly get higher WITH your step, than switch, and go lower with it,ya get me.....

i might have to go unwrap to today,now....

haha,thanks for reminding me

ohh,and a buddy is always a good idea, even just to place a hand on when your about t lose it,....or call the hospital .......

I think I'm going to try the stick. How long should it be?

I only have dynamic ropes and they're "designated" for leading - I want to keep slacklining and climbing gear separate. If I don't improve with the stick I might go and buy some static rope for a handrail.

One thing I've noticed is that slacklining requires quite a bit of leg power -especially if I try to stay low. Is this always the case or am I just too tense?

Thanks!

no,no your right,it IS leg power,but if your a climber(i assume you are?),you know the feeling,haha....

but you may be a bit tense, best to be loose, mentaly & physically...

as far ass the stick, bar, whatever long object.....

general rule of thumb is the longer the stick, the easier it will be,those tight ropers, that do 100 foot spans and shit, have like 20 foot long poles(that's the word,haha)....

i'd say just what you got on hand, make sure it's got some weight to it,a nice sway, you know.....

static-rope is pretty cheap,but i don't think you'll need it....

the "pole" does wonders....it could also help you " catch" yourself if you goin' off....just jam it into the gound and come down on the pole, not the rope(this could probally be really dangerous,haha).....

i'd like to know how it goes man,i don't talk to many others that have tried it to any real degree....

I'll keep you updated, maybe even take some photos (not yet though!)

Yeah I'm a climber. You?
Actually, I started slacklining because a finger injury is currently preventing me from climbing. Had to think of something to do, so I decided to give slacklining a go!

yea,if my family was ever being a family is was while climbing....

i think i must have started going out and actually "climbing" when i was like 7(with father/his friends & bro of course) .....

it was constant until i was like 16,the last few years,it's not nearly as much...but i still head out sometimes.......

i actually had a climbing wall ,i built into my basment in my old house, mire like a cave, but you get the point,i was MUCH more into Bouldering as i got older.....i never really liked the rope/harness,haha.....

Nice to see more climbers in the Shroomery. Not too many of us here

Are there good routes in Georgia? (I'm assuming north GA means Georgia, I don't know much about the geography of the states)

Maybe so...this is not a climbing site, after all

The only ones I can think of are Loki, Papaver, Stefan and Seuss.

ShiekOfShiitake, Odin, Annie... I can't think of any others, but I've seen the discussions.
