HELP! DSL OR CABLE?
    #4412022 -

What should I go with, there will be three of us splitting the connection, I'd go with cable but I think the people who lived in the apartment are stealing cable from people on the first floor, will this be found during the installation of the cable? Thanks for the help!

i'd go with dsl if it's a 1.5//256kbps connection, like most dsls are. more stable connection, reliable, and the speeds are (probably) not much slower than cable. may be a bit more expensive, but i'd take dsl over cable any day.

unless you live in the great white north, or socal, and have access to opt. online. then, without a fucking doubt, opti is your inet of choice.

I have a cable modem and it has treated me very well.

Connection is very reliable.

As for which is better, I can't tell you since I've never had DSL.

Cable is good for the money though.

:thumbup:What he said

Cable connections can be pretty fast but they are much less reliable.

If you have a reputible cable company, they'll be a million times better than DSL. Especially if you live in Canada. In my town, we only have one DSL provider and they suck balls compared to cable.

If you live in the states, I'd probably go with DSL. There are far more larger phone companies that offer DSL as opposed to reliable cable companies. Go with whomever are more reputible in your area. Shouldn't be too tough to ask a few friends.

i like my cable connection.

lately, i've been considering selling my desktop PC for a laptop with a wireless modem. my roommates and friends that have them get online for free near most populated places.. especially our school. it'd be nice to be able to login on campus anywhere.

I had DSL for about 4 years, and now I've had cable for about 2. One isn't inherently better, faster or more stable than the other, it all depends on the companies which are offering the service. That broadbandreports site will help give you an idea who is good and who to avoid.

Once you've narrowed it down just look for the fastest speed at the lowest price. Make sure you get a decent upstream too, for instance I'd probably go with 1.5mbps/768kbps over 3mbps/128kbps. For what it's worth, in my area cable is definitely the better option.

Good luck, broadband rules!

P.S. If you're worried about getting busted, have the people downstairs disconnect their stolen cable when the technician comes out. Also if you're splitting your connection among three people you might want to look into a router with QoS functionality (the Dlink DGL-4100/4300 are good). This would probably help your internet speed as much as paying for a higher bandwidth tier from your ISP.

Heh.. its funny, I was facing this exact dillema recently.. what did we end up doing? One of us got a 3.0m/0.8m DSL connection, and I'm splitting a 6.5m/0.9m cable connection with my other roommate. Works out to roughly 30$ cdn each per month, and we each have fairly good unlimited connections. As well, I'm supplementing mine with the neighbours wifi, so I've got effectivly 6.5m/0.9m shared with my buddy, and 3.0/0.8m shared with the neighbour. ;D

I dont think it matters - they are pretty much the same. Go with most affordable package.

It depends on your area. Here, DSL is far cheaper than cable. DSL is reasonably fast, although cable is usually much faster. But you can't just get cable internet here. You have to get the cable TV along with it. :frown:

if you just surf the web and what not, DSL and cable are pretty much on the same level, but if you download movies or play games online or whatever, id go with the faster connection (Cable), because it will definitely be noticeable.

i have cable, and have never had a problem with it...

Cable is not as good for gaming, its very difficult for a cable connection to reach the ping times of a dsl connection.. for downloading, though.. I'd go with cable, simply due to the massive bandwidth.. really.. you'll be happy with either.

reliability wise, my cable rarely goes out here in the city, but in the forest area, it went out from time to time, maybe once a month and had to reset the modem... i just hooked it up to a switch (the switch box's that moniters sit on) and flip it off and then on really quickly... i have more problems with the router fucking up than my modem... I also get my phone thru it too... so i dont have to pay the phone company an extra $8 for phone service....

but go for speed vs price VS what your gonna be using... with 3 people, you would imagine that there are going to be A LOT of downloading.... it will probably piss you off too, if you've got downloads....
