I think with some hacking, yeah, but I don't think they're set up to prey on people like that. And it would be just as likely with wireless: it's still their network, it's just wireless.

anyone between your computer and the computer of the recipient can read your email unless you encrypt it.

try this. open a terminal window and type in:

tracert www.google.com

you will see the stops just between you and google.

Are you using your school email or a web based email?

It's not terribly difficult to encrypt your e-mail, which makes it exorbitantly impractical for anyone except you and the recipient to read the contents.

Another weird thing is that ever since using the cable, my seeding in azureus has been down by quite a lot

If you are using their network, they 'can' read everything that goes across it, all email, website, everything. Unless you encrypt your email. And they likely can do this without a warrant, you probably signed something saying you agree to this. It's their network after all.

Now, will they? Probably not. At least not without a reason, it's a lot of work to do it.

Well it's not like trading pictures is illegal

And really, that's a totally ambiguous statement

There was an article I read a couple months ago about college kids at big universities getting slapped with illegal downloading charges because they were doing it from the universities network.....

don't use peer to peer utilities on a university. The RIAA has been known to pressure universities into extorting money out of their students with even the flimsiest (and falsest) of evidence suggesting copyright infringement.

Also, networks like that often throttle the bandwidth available to torrents and p2p in an attempt to discourage piracy.

These cunts live by the metaphorical gun.

Probably depends on what you are doing with it. If you are trading copyrighted material, it's not legal.

What is? I'll clarify...

Bittorrent isn't illegal itself but its so commonly used for piracy that university networks try to discourage its use altogether.

If your using a universities or any school's networt:

A. You most likely signed a technology agreement, simply they say you won't do anything illegal on the school's network (downloading copyrighted stuff, hacking, etc) and since you are on their network, they have the "right" to read or intercept what you send.

B. It doesn't matter if your wired with ethernet or wireless, school networks are not known for the security they provide.

If your paranoid download an encrypted e-mailer, use ethernet when possible, and don't attract attention by using P2P programs, bitTorrents aren't a big deal, just discouraged. Students have been busted before, and will be again, don't be that guy.
