Apathy is not death...it is stagnation which can or cannot lead to death. It certainly leads to stasis.

--------------------
"A warrior is a hunter. He calculates everything. That's control. Once his calculations are over, he acts. He lets go. That's abandon. A warrior is not a leaf at the mercy of the wind. No one can push him; no one can make him do things against himself or against his better judgment. A warrior is tuned to survive, and he survives in the best of all possible fashions." ― Carlos Castaneda

Apathy is indifference... nothing more, nothing less... it could be good or bad.

Not death of the physical body, but death (or perhaps coma?) of the energetic body.

The only way something has life is if it's growing or changing in some way, and apathy tends to lead to a lack of mental and emotional growth, so it seems fair to say that, yeah.

I always thought retirement, sitting on the porch swing, with a tall glass of ice tea and not a care in the world, was the goal!

Perhaps that doesn't qualify as apathy, you still care about who's beside you on the swing, the view, is there enough sugar in the tea, and why does that swing keep making that creaking noise?

Ever watch the series Cathouse?  The hookers hate when the "old stud" on Viagra shows "up".  He's hard, but getting him to come and out the door is another matter.  That makes sense, keep him around enough to keep the "old lady" happy, but these pros need to move on...

Maybe they should charge him by the hour, instead of by the act?

"Charge him by the hour"

LOL.  I knew I was in trouble today when my plumber tried to convince me that time and materials was better than a bid.

How about "not to exceed"?

And hookers and plumbers both screw you. You might feel better after the hooker (or not, those STDs can be a drag...).

being apathetic about things one has no control over can protect sustain life
but being apathetic about things one does have control over is the opposite of life

apathy/anomie? [Re: crunchytoast]
    #4407160 - 07/15/05 07:59 AM (18 years, 8 months ago)

anomie:
Social instability caused by erosion of standards and values.
Alienation and purposelessness experienced by a person or a class as a result of a lack of standards, values, or ideals: ?We must now brace ourselves for disquisitions on peer pressure, adolescent anomie and rage? (Charles Krauthammer).
