Apathy
    #4280414 - 06/10/05 04:41 PM (12 years, 20 days ago)

I was baptised after I was born and was also heavily influenced by Judaism. My father was Jewish and my mother was Eastern Orthodox Christian. After doing shrooms and learning more about human history/religion in school I have become sort of atheist. I also don't feel bad about people dying, I see tearing flesh as just molecules being broken up, I see everything with a scientific point of view which makes me seem like I heartless. What should I do?

Nothing at all. Sounds good to me. Nothing wrong with taking an objective scientific stance in life. Your parents might not like it but that's their problem.

Open your mind to other systems. You're looking at everything in useful way, but it's only a system ( i repeat this a lot, but everything systematic *must* have a flaw ).

Since you need to start somewhere either look for the positive qualities in your parents' religions or rigorously try out *any* other system and try explaining things through it. Your parents could explain everything using their religions, but it was wrong from certain viewpoints.

Whatever it is, unless you feel you want change and actively work toward it, it won't happen. Don't do it if you're fine looking at things from a scientific viewpoint, or you won't adopt the other viewpoint.

it does not matter how you seem, you do not sound heartless and you probably do care dearly for people who you see as participants in a miracle that is larger than can be contained in single lifetimes.

it will be worth the effort to show consideration for others' suffering and to share your inspiration

well what do you want to do? If you like being like this, continue, if you want to be something else, then first set a goal, and then come back for advice. How can any of us tell you what to do when you haven't specified what you want to become

But you don't sound apathetic to me...

Funny you should say this, because I am similar in that I approach most things from a scientific perspective.

I'm reading Casteneda's books right now, and by reading them I've realized that there is the very real possibility that there is more to this reality than meets the eye, or instrument. Occam's Razor stipulates that since we have not and as of yet cannot measure or record anything about the existence of other dimensions or reality aside from our three plus one dimensions, then other realities must not exist. However, subjective experiences suggest otherwise, and since all our reality really is, is the experience of sensory input from a consensual reality, that too is subjective, so we cannot so easily discount the existence of other worlds or realities.

At least that's what I've so far come to conclude.

he is not on the right path because there is no right path.

"Right" and "Wrong" are both entirely subjective terms, in this context, so "the right path" is my opinion just as "there is no right path" is your opinion.

My opinion is that the "right" path involves a constant and consistant move towards knowledge and truth. The "wrong" path is a constant move towards ignorance.

Just an opinion

Where have I pushed my ideas? Can you give me an example?

I provide data, along with my personal viewpoint. What you (or he) does with this data/viewpoint really doesn't matter to me. I just don't care.

all I know about you is your name ("trendal") which I remember from these forums. I have no memory of your views and beliefs, so can't help you with that question

If you were truly apathetic, you wouldn't care about feeling the way you do.

If you had a son, and his arm was caught in a lawn mower blade, I doubt you would JUST experience witnessing the tearing up of molecules.

why do you doubt it?
I'd think it more likely.

In times of emergency, you need to shove your emotions down your throat and do everything you can to fix the problem.

One emotion needs to be in play to get us to act quickly in the first place and that is caring. An apathetic person would not care to do anything about it. They would just sit and watch. That is apathy.

He probably would care to do something about it and that is why I say, he most likely is not truly apathetic. Apathetic people just don't care about anything.

well, that's true from a general perspective. However, in this case, he'd be protecting his progeny. Looking at it purely from a scientific, emotionless viewpoint as he suggested says that he should keep his son alive so he can reproduce.

I don't think what he is talking about is pure apathy?
