American 'Castles'

I know of Hearst Castle (San Simeon), but I can't find any other places that are San Simeon like. Anybody know of any other American 'Castles'?

we don't have castles here. there is no monarchy. there are no feudal kingdoms. this area was populated by people who wanted to get away from assholes in castles.

san simeon is sweet.

there's a great campground south of the castle on the
coast and great surfing at moonstone beach.

You'll have a hard time finding castles around here. Castles largely stopped being built after the development of the cannon. They made the thick castle walls somewhat useless.

Scotty's Castle in Death Valley is a really interesting place. And the history surrounding it is facinating. You might not consider it a true 'castle' but it is really a neat estate built in one of the most hostile environments in the US. Definately worth stopping in if you are in Death Valley.

i guess it's mainly a question of semantics, most fortifications built in the last couple of hundfred years tend to be called "forts" not castles. this applies to the old world as well as the states.

but there are some "modern" castles around and about. though as previously mentionned they tend to be "romantic" castles rather than proper military things. here's one in the UK for example:
