Howl's Moving Castle
    #6716886 - 03/27/07 03:32 PM (17 years, 6 days ago)

came in the Netflix today. Gonna watch it tonight. I  Miyazaki.

spirited away is the coolest miyazaki film I've seen...visually anyway.  princess mononoke has a great story and all, but those images in spirited away of the traintracks underwater in towards the end have stuck with me ever since I saw it.

It's a beautiful movie but the plot is kind of confusing if you haven't read the book.
If you do want to read the book, the author is called Diana Wynne Jones--her books are amazing but for some reason she's never been very popular or well-known in the US. She's British and her work is very much appreciated and recognized in the UK. I've been a fan since I was in elementary school and happened to pick up one of her books at the library.

:oogle:  I watched that movie just last night...  One of my all-time favorites.

I love all Miyazaki films, but Princess Mononoke is my favorite, followed closely by Howl's Moving Castle.  His films are almost the only animes I really care for, but they're also some of my favorite films too.

DWJ is fantastic. I highly recommend the Chrestomanci series as a whole and The Homeward Bounders is one of my all time favorite books. Some of her stuff might technically be considered "children's fantasy" but it's well written and engaging for any age, similar to Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials or the Harry Potter series.

Combining her genius with Miyazaki is simply sublime.

That's a good one. I bought it last year.

Add Nausicaa of the Valle of the Winds to your netflix queue - another excellent (older) Miyazaki.

The Homeward Bounders is one of my favorite books ever.
The Lives of Christopher Chant was the first DWJ book I ever read (almost 20 years ago!) and I drove my parents crazy trying to find all of the books she had ever written and I would get so into them that I'd read them under my desk at school.

I've long thought The Homeward Bounders would be a fantastic movie if done right. I think Miyazaki would be an excellent choice for that, or perhaps the people behind Mirrormask or Pan's Labyrinth, it'd have to be done right or I'd go on a killing rampage.

How so? It's not really the same as his other movies, it has a decidedly different feel (no surprise, coming from a welsh author). I liked it more for the odd relationships and what not, plus the fun random weirdness.

Isn't Mirrormask Neil Gaimans work?  To add to the topic, pretty sure it was he who adapted the screenplay of princess mononoke to the english version...
Also, the next Miyazaki film is due summer 2008....a bunch(I mean a shitload) of Neil Gaiman's works are being put to film in the coming couple years as well.  might be good...or it might kill it.

Meh I get sick of the subtitle elitists. Sometimes it's better, sure. I happen to prefer Crouching Tiger that way, simply because I love to hear the language. But Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle all have excellent english voice acting. Really, to try to convince people otherwise is disingenuous at best.

I completely and utterly agree...

Anyway, why was I disappointed? I don't know - perhaps it wasn't what I was in the mood for. The pace was just so slow and dreamy.

Watch Princess Mononoki, you wont be disapointed. The pace is much faster, there is more action and generally it has a better, more defined plot.

hah. disingenuous...really?

since reading doesn't bother me, and if i want to get the full visual effect i'll just watch it again after i know what's going on, the original voices is the only way i'll watch these movies.

when people are over of course we have to watch them in english, and it kills me.

but whatever floats your boat.

I didn't like Howl's quite as much as all the others.  It was a little on the standard children's fairy tale side, but it did have some trippy elements as well and Howl was dreamy!

I love Miyazaki films personally, they are really the only films I HAVE to see.  Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind is a must see as well.

Also if there are any movies I recommend tripping - its Miyazaki films.  So far I have waited to trip for my first view of each of these - make's the movie just a touch better.:mushroom2::crazy2:

Tales from Earthsea will be coming out later this year or next year?  They make us wait so long.  :[

I just rented Howl the other day too.  I love the artwork in it, but it does seem like a diluted Miyazaki film.  Perhaps because it wasn't an original story of his?

Surprised nobody mentioned the other 2 castle movies he did.  Castle in the Sky(1986) and Lupin III:Castle of Cagliostro(1979), both awesome.

They're some of the top-selling movies of all time in Japan. It's not just kids going to see them.

I like both. I just don't see why people get all huffy and elitist about it. It's not like the fact it's in a different language some how means it's more real or heartfelt or anything like that. I've watched foreign-animated films before where some of the original acting is mediocre at best. I just think it's a rather ignorant bit of purism that makes no sense.

This of course is in reference to animated films where everything is a voice over anyway, regardless of the language. For live action I generally prefer the original language just to avoid the out-of-sync distraction effect.

I'm joining the club. I just watched Howl's Moving Castle, like 10 minutes ago, I watched Kiki's Delivery Service this morning, and Spirited Away yesterday afternoon.

I can't believe I've been missing out on this guy's stuff. Spirited Away was absolutely incredible. Castle didn't make quite as much sense to me, but still was really fun. And Kiki's of course was nothing special.

Does anyone else feel like these movies have an RPG feel to them?
