Here's a couple quick shots taken through a cubic zirconia I have laying around (shit I HOPE it's a zirconia...or I've been sitting on a large diamond for years!)

This last one is just a simple head-on shot of the beam itself. I like it because, for unknown reasons, it created a "halo" effect around the beam in the center (look closely and you can see a lot of concentric red circles in the image).

The light bending around the curvature of the lens?

I expect you are correct, and that the concentric circles are produced by interference in the light.

How coherent is that laser? Does it diverge much on great distances?

Re: Pictures I made with my laser [Re: Annom]

Coherence length for most HeNe lasers is around 10-30cm. The beam will diverge to about 1m diameter by 2km.

For the cost, I don't think this can be beat by any other laser type. I'm sure the only lasers you could find for less than $20 would be diode lasers which have rather horrid coherence length and beam profile (the beam is actually wedge-shaped and will diverge to 1m after only 1m without external optics!).

Here's a couple more pics taken with the gemstone. ALl photos were taken of the image displayed on a white cardboard screen placed about 1 foot behind the gemstone.

With the beam aimed sideways through the base of the gem:

Same thing, but with the gem spinning rapidly:

Various images taken with the beam aimed through the top of the gem, exiting from the point on the bottom:

And here's the gem in question:

i would guess the laser is showing the grind marks from when the lense was made.

I had thought that myself, too. The laser point is certainly small enough to greatly magnify any fine lines in the lense.

Although I don't think it would produce the perfectly concentric rings that the picture has, unless the laser point was aimed at the EXACT center of the lense.

I by no means have that kind of accuracy in my aiming setup :smirk:

It's a HeNe gas laser, rated at 1mW.

Eh, that aint nuthin. Check out the one-half petawatt laser I'm building in my basement: :whoa:

point that thing at a stop sign! my friend use to point his little pocket laser at street signs and the whole sign would explode in red light..

a laser pointed at mylar is kind of cool too.

Hehe yeah that was one of the first things I tried, as soon as it got dark outside :smirk:

This one lights up the whole stop sigh pretty bright. I'll try and take a pic tonight.
