You pick the next Justice
    #4359701 - 07/01/05 01:28 PM (18 years, 9 months ago)

Robert Houghwout Jackson died in 1954. He was the last serving Supreme Court Justice who did not have a law degree. Even though he didn't have a law degree, he still read the books, passed the bar and practiced law.

But that wasn't always the case. You don't have to be a lawyer to be a Supreme Court Justice. George Washington appointed diplomats and statemens to the Supreme Court. I don't know who the last Supreme Court Justice was who didn't practice law. It isn't a requirement. That leads to todays interesting (or moronic) question...

I wouldn't mind shaking it up opening up the position to every possible candidate. You obviously need someone with an uncommon amount of common sense in my opinion. That is something that the Supreme Court found lacking in their lastest decision on private property rights.

I doubt a layman would have done that. You barely have to be able to rub two sticks together to figure out that you shouldn't boot grandma out of her house for a strip mall.

So tell me friends, who are your heros? Who would you want to be a fair and ballanced judge and advocate for the rest of us? Can you think of anyone in life that you admire that you would want on the court?

My vote would go to Colin Powell. I think he is intelligent, dedicated, hard working, and most of all a reasonable man. He may not be a law scholar, but you would still have 8 other scholars of law on there, (and they don't always make the right calls when left alone anyway). I say put somebody on there that is more in touch with America and actual Americans.

And this may surprise some people, being the facist that I am, but the other name that comes to mind is Ralph Nader. I actually think that Ralph Nader would be a great Justice.

If you could choose the next Justice, and he wasn't allowed to have a law degree, who would you choose?

Mike Tyson? Robin Givens would be pissed. And he does have extensive experience with the legal system.

I apologize for my ignorance. Who in the hell is Tyson?

Ancalagon would be an exceptional justice. From reading his posts I know that in terms of liberty and rulings he would lead this country in the right direction.

Though in real life he's probably a diehard Bush-supporter wanting mandatory drug tests for all citizens and implemented socialist policies.

John McCain has done some reputable service to his country as a soldier. He is reportedly a war hero, and I have no evidence or inclination that any of that is fabricated. He was shot down over Vietnam and spent years as a POW. That isn't the whole story.

Remember Charles Keating? The Savings and Loan scandal? The Keating Five? John McCain was one of the Keating Five.

John McCain used to take private jets to Charles Keating's private island in the Bahamas. And now he claims to be the poster child to campaign finance reform. Bought and sold my friend of a friend.

One quote that I read in college has stuck with me, and will for all of time. A reporter asked Charles Keating if he thought his campaign contributions influenced the actions of the members of the Keating Five. Charles Keating replied "I should hope so.".

John McCain. Campaign Finance reform. I should hope so.

John McCain is a liar and a two faced son of a bitch. And I am a conservative. I don't even like the fact that he is in the Senate. I don't want him to be President, and I don't want him to be on the Supreme Court.

Would you rather have Bush and Cheney as president and vice president rather than McCain and whoever he'd choose?

Kennedy Slams Unnamed Supreme Court Nominee
by Scott Ott

(2005-07-02) -- Sen. Ted Kennedy, D-MA, today criticized President George Bush's as-yet-unnamed replacement for retiring Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor as a "brutal, Bible-thumping, right-wing ideologue who hates minorities, women and cocker spaniels."

"He or she is clearly outside the mainstream of American values," said Sen. Kennedy. "President Bush has again ignored the Senate's 'advice and consent' role, forcing Democrats to filibuster this outrageous nominee."

The Massachusetts Senator said his aides have already discovered "reams of memos" showing that the man or woman Mr. Bush will appoint has "a history of abusing subordinates, dodging military service, hiring undocumented workers, spanking his or her children and rolling back the clock on human rights to the days when the Pharaohs ruled Egypt with an iron fist."

The Senator's office issued a news release to the media documenting the allegations against the potential high court judge, with a convenient blank line allowing reporters to fill in the nominee's name as soon as that information is leaked.
