Fake-ass Flowhood?
    #4356072 -

I read somewhere, sometime (on this message board), about a guy who made his ghetto flowhood with a rubbermaid container and an inexpensive Holmes HEPA filter from wally-world.  He claimed success.

How effective are the $20-$30 HEPA filters that can be bought at the world's leading merchandiser?  Are they effective enough to be used in the construction of a poorman's laminar flow hood?

And to satisfy the people who would link me to a site on constructing a real one;  I don't have the money right now. :gonzo:

A still air glovebox will give you the best results but if you must have a getto flowhood remember you'll be introducing large volumes of semi-sterile air so chances of contams go up compared to still air (FACT!) I have heard of many using these with good success so you will have to find out for yourself, IME it all depends on local and sporeloads  GL and have fun

They are actually better than you might expect. I tested the Holmes model HAP240 by putting an agar plate in the air stream for 60 seconds with no contamination at all. It is not rated as high as a professional HEPA but it is adequate for a hobbiest.

I also found this setup online using the same unit for sterile rose tissue culture. It is pretty crude but gives an idea of what can be done. I am sure with some tweaking it could be better.

the are actually pretty good filters, my friend tommy uses one in his grow closet and has run casings til the 6th flush... he has only had one contam in over a year of casings... i would imagine you could make a ghetto flowhood pretty nicely with one.

Here's my rig that i've got about 45-50 bucks into. The Holmes filters are fine IMO. I've never had a problem with mine at all, and the area I live in is pretty thick with molds at this time of the year. Nothin fancy, but works like a charm.

I have been wondering about this.  I keep seeing glove boxes with fans on them (sometimes described as "positive pressure glove box") but to my mind you are adding contaminants even with a HEPA filter on it (though very few perhaps) as opposed to just closing it up as best you can and making sure you clean the snot out of it before you get started.  The principal behind a flow hood is that you get a laminar flow so no contaminants will settle, and inside a glove box whatever containants you do have are just getting swirled around if you have a fan going.  It would seem that a fan would just make matters worse.  Sure, it keeps conatiminants from falling in, but with a typical container this seems to me less likely than contaminants getting in through a filter.

Am I off base on this?

I think your right on here... a still air glovebox seems to be much more sterile IMO.

For some reason do not find myself attracted to a still air glovebox, never liked the idea since I 1st read about it in TMC. I think it is the lack of workspace, the confinement of a box...
Having to load it, lysol it, and then worry about my hands, or even the holes I put them through, being a vector for contams. And I certainly can't fit my canner in there.

Just seems like even the most basic flowhood setup would be more efficient and easire to apply to the hobby.

I think I'm going to add an apropriatly sized high-quality A/C filter (made by Arm&Hammer? seen them, orange packaging can't remember the name grrrr.....) to the back of the fake flowhood pictured, 2"-3" from the filter output to act as a plenum; that should more evenly distribute the airflow, and filter it again.

That will be just that much more sterile, but ultimately, i dont think you could beat a still air glovebox unless you wanted to spend tons of $. making a completely sterile room.
