The truth about mail irradiation

Hi all, I just spoke with the National Control Center for the U.S. Postal Service in Washington, DC. They directed me to the engineer who is dealing with the manufacturers of the irradiator devices. A manufacturer representative should contact me in the near future about my concerns over destruction of medicinal mushroom living cultures and spores by irradiation processes. Remember, this doesn't affect this community only. Small businesses that encourage cultivation of precious medicinal species (i.e. Paul Stamets' Fungi Perfecti, the Mushroom People, etc.) could be seriously hampered by this effort to cleanse pieces of mail. What I can tell you with certainty, is that these machines are not in place yet on a widespread basis. Perhaps postal centers in NY and DC have some operating already due to immediate need. I will post more when I hear from the manufacturer. I can only guess that hundreds or more have called about the effects of this process. Who knows when I'll get word on this, but when I do, I'll spread the word here.

I emailed the us postal service last night concerning this. They said that there are no plans to implement irradiation to sterilize mail in the near future. There is a lot of concern over this by many other businesses and industries, not just the omc. As lots of rather large business make their money by sending live product. Gourmet spores, cultures, plant seeds, etc. They said they are working on a system to help prevent the spread of any infectious diseases sent through the mail, but have nothing in the works as of yet, and that if there is, it will most likely be something that will kill anything on the package/envelope. Therefore not really protecting someone actually opening a package/envelope with whatever inside.
