Another view, jar next to it has two spots of that very size.

hmm... well you might be screwed based on those latest pics. I would strongly consider useing a finer grade of Vermiculite.

I got a 20L bag of the vermiculite -- it looks like the size that everybody else uses and my friend uses it with no problem. Why do those last pictures make you think I am screwed? I'de also like to add that these patches grew on uncolonized substrate -- not over the mycellium. They havent spread at all and the mycellium has gone around it. It leads me to belive that I can just cut it out as long as it doesnt go too deep/

Well thats just it. I'm thinking that that black stuff often does grow deep inside. If it dont, sure it will fruit. As far as the vermiculite goes, the thinking here is that a finer grade will filter the air better thru the top. You did mention that the black spots didnt apear untill you losen the lids. So I'm asuming thats where it came from. PF recomends the finer grade of vermiculite as well. Good luck.

If you could get a picture that is as clear as the second one but as close as the first one I think that would help. There is a nice glare on the top on right at where the stuff is.

It couldnt hurt to describe it more clearly as it is a little hard to see.

Is it grainy? Is it more black or more grey? Is there any smell? etc.

The more information that you can give us the more likely it is that someone will be able to identify it.

Karen

That looks more like a bacterial contamination, than black pin mold. If I'm right, you should have no problem carving away the rotten substrate. Hard to tell from those pics, but the black will quickly overtake healthy mycelia.

Well, you have to understand that this black has been there for quite a long time. It first showed up at one of the innoculation sites. It either came in through the air (hopefully) or started in the middle and spread. It hasent spread since the day I noticed it. The jars are almost ready to birth. They arae about 98% colonized so I will see by tonight.

The jars were just birthed. The black spots were cut out with ease. They didnt produce anything beneath the initial surface. The spots still smelt "mushroomery". Surrounding mycellium was very thick and at many points even proceeded to infiltrate the dry vermiculite barrier. The two jars are sitting directly on perlite in a rather slack ice cream bucket. They are sitting in sunlight and will receive a good 12 hours or so of light a day. Wish me luck, i'll post updates in a different thread.
