This is a really dumb question, I'm sure. but I'm about to purchase my first pipe and I want to know if I need to use a screen in it.
it's just a cheap glass pipe.

Iv never used a screen in any of my glass pipes. Sometimes its convenient I guess... but never totally necessary in a glass. If you get a screen get one of the little glass screens. Most places will toss you one for free with your purchase.

I like to grind my herbal, so i put a screen in any bowl I use. Metal screens can be found in most fossits, thats what I always use.

Screens out of Foccits contain other metals and stuff the screen was there to keep out...Bad for you it is 
I use a screen in my glass piece for resin and that's it..I have a tendency to suck the ash through but only because I hit it too hard I guess.
You should be fine withought one

thanks for the quick replies, I got some very dank stuff from Bonnaroo and have nothing to smoke it with! It's been a long time since I had some weed, this past weekend was my first time smoking in about a year. I couldn't resist purchasing some.

If you want a better pipe smoking experience, I strongly recommend a screen to accommodate a more finely chopped ganja for a more enjoyable bowl. Tossing a whole unbroken bud into a pipe gets the job done in a pinch, but personally, I find that's like smoking a poorly rolled joint. It burns unevenly, needs constant relighting, and overall just isn't a joy to smoke. Getting high feels much more rewarding if you put some care into prepping your stash, and packing a good bowl is as respectable as a well rolled joint. Granted, it's much easier to pack a bowl, but it puts that extra 'love' into it.
Chop some good ganja to a fine, joint worthy consistency, and dump it into the bowl. Pack it down loosely; it should have a spongy quality to it. Then lightly draw as you light it, spreading the flame over the entire surface of the green. If you do it right, you may never even have to re-light the bowl as you relax and enjoy your pot.

Hey man I always broke my bud up finely trust me. I consider myself a professional at breaking up bud.  I take the time to get all the stem out and it is always finely broken up. The trick is to take the bud and pinch it together into a ball in the middle of your palm. (it will stick unless you have some shwag brick bullshit). Take your glass bowl and scoop it off your palm using your thumb and press down on it into the bowl. There is no need for a screen.

...Well, it's all just preference, no. Some people like joint filters, some don't. Cone or straight, screen or no, it's the experience that counts.
And about breaking up bud.... if your the professional, then I am the professor  . I've got my own chopping board and little cleaver for my chopping.
