How exactly do pipes fill in?

I have some understanding of how the color fills in on pipes but I don't really understand.

What could I do to speed up the process?

I have a pipe is filling in slowly with cool purple and blue colors, but it's filling in on certain places. Is the only way to make it color up smoking out of it?

i thought it was a combo of heat and resin build up, but someone can correct me on that one.

Yeah smoking is basically the only way, unless you wanna fill your piece with mud or something. Just buy a quarter and smoke the whole thing out the pipe only and it will basically fill the whole inside. Suck the ash through the bowl into the inside of the pipe if you want it to fill a bit quicker.

It's just resin. Keep smoking and it will "fill in"(get dirty).

I never understood why people wanted their bowls all nasty. I clean mine once a week. Just did about 2 hours ago.

It's the resin that changes the colour. Just keep smoking out of it as much as you can and don't clean it.
I did that for a couple of months, but prefer a clean pipe and gave it a good rinse with iso.

Put in front of something solid black.Other then that, just smoke more..
My roor did't come colored, so :justdontknow:.

im a glass blower and i can actually answer that for you.

the difference between a color changing pipe and a normal one is Silver, yes 99.999% pure silver

the glass blower will hold a little piece of it infront of the flame, and it will melt and vaporize and then land on the molten glass and stick there.... leaving a very light blue, or sometimes yellow color. as resin backs it, the color gets more noticable.

this is also done with pure gold, which leaves a pink color change to the glass.

Well how come parts of the glass are purple a blue, yet most of it is still clear. Will this become visible because of more resin buildup?

the silver "fume" as we call it, does not always fill in evenly

My bowl is either too dirty or too clean. Either it's filled with crap, or the smoke hole is too big.

you don't want to use a metal screen in a glass pipe, they have glass screens for glass pipes. they're these weird looking little glass things, they almost look like jax.

Doesn't that kind of defeat the purpose of smoking through glass?  Passing smoke through heated metal is the main thing I'm looking to avoid when I smoke through a glass piece.  Mainly because it colors the flavor and character of the smoke.


they make glass screens, they are called jumpin jacks. they are a great alternative to metal screens. especially if the hole in your bowl is wider than it should be. you can find them in most headshops  :smile2:

Use stainless steel screens instead of brass. They're a little more expensive but inert.

There are also glass 'screens'. They're not really screens. They're actually more like toy jacks made of glass.

Or just pack 'em fat;).


Or use a one hitter if it's just you getting stoned some times and blow all your hits into your color changer if you're that impatient hahaaaa.

Yeah, I'm waiting for a glass screen.

The pipe works just fine if I smoke enough to clog it a little. So there's really no rush... until I NEED to clean it, then it sucks for a week again.
