Lysol causing mutants? Biology basics...reproduction....any input?
    #4295583 - 06/14/05 04:25 PM (18 years, 10 months ago)

Asexual organisms, such as fungus, reproduce through conjugation, the simplist form of sexual reproduction. This occurs during vegetative growth. However, once the fungus begins to fruit, I believe it stops vegetative growth and switches all of its energy into fruiting growth.

If this is so, then all of the gamettes and sexual reproduction has already occurred. All alleles have been passed, and therefore the time that mutations could have been introduced has passed as well.

This is how I understand fungus to reproduce. Therefore, how once fruiting begins, isn't it impossible for mutagens (such as Lysol) to affect the fungus? I suppose the only way this would be possible is if Lysol is a mutagen in the way that Radiation is to mammals...as in it causes mutations in already formed beings.

Hmmm...anyone have any more input on this?

The problem is with your definitions.

A rosecomb, a weird looking inside-out mushroom, and other deformities are called mutants. They're usually caused by hydrocarbons coming in contact with the mycelium during fruitbody production. Although it's called a mutant, this is a misnomer; it is not what geneticists call a mutation because it isn't caused by damage to the organism's DNA. It's just the hydrocarbon interfering with the usual growth of the mycelium into the fruitbody. This is evidenced by the fact that growing new mushrooms from the spores of the deformed fruitbody don't exhibit the deformity.

You are correct that by the time fruitbodies are forming, the genetics have been fixed.

That said, true genetic mutations have been observed when the mycelium is grown under UV light for several generations. In this case, albino fruitbodies that appear otherwise normal start to emerge. A new grow from the spores of the albino fruitbodies will propagate the mutation and also grow albinos.

Make sense?  :mushroom2:

Makes total sense. I guess I was thinking of mutation as in strict biological terms...like a genetic mutation passed from one gamette. I guess when people say "Don't use Lysol, it causes mutes", they don't mean strict biological mutations, but it is...

just the hydrocarbon interfering with the usual growth of the mycelium into the fruitbody

...which makes sense.

Diploid, can you cite where the UV light causes mutations? I was wondering if its true, because that may be why my fruits are mutating.. and after each generation its getting worse..

Robert McPhereson, the original PF Tek inventor, found this result when he exposed the Matias Romero strain to UV light. After a few generations, an albino mutation showed up that, as I recall, ended up sterile. He was luckily able to restore the genetic line from an old slant.

Lemme see if I can find a reference, and I'll post it.
