Use vermiculite only since there will be a less chance of contaminations.

This seems like a good post to ask this, so here goes: I've used the cake method with success and I'd like to try the casing method but I don't have any idea what the casing method is, I've just heard it produces far greater yields. Does anyone know where I can get some info on this or can give me a brief summary. Thanks

my pet mongoose is in the process of casing for the first time as well, also using the shroom wizard's method... he's noticed that most teks recommend using verm or verm/soil to case with , but the wizards guide uses only soil for the top layer... do you have any idea why that is? is there any advantage to using all soil? especially if verm prevents contamination... ?

ok a casing is basicly a non nutritious (top) layer, used for water delivery. So to make a casing break up some colinized substrate (either grain or some bulk substrate you have innoculated with grain, you can just use a couple of colinized BRF cakes if you wish) crumble your substrate into small pieces and make a layer 1 1/2" -3" thick, the thicker it is the better your flushes will be, if it's more than 4" this rule quits applying. I personally sterilize my casing soil (usually just verm) First I get it soaking wet and drain it throw it in some jars/ spawn bag pressure cook it for 45 min let it cool and its ready to go. some people use 50/50 peat&verm and a bit o lime. anyways, just make about 1/2"- 1" layer of casing (the thicker it is the more time it will take take the mycel to grow through the casing layer and pin) keep it humid about 80-90% and spray it when it looks dry, in about 1-3 weeks you should get pins, then quit spraying and let em go till you pick em, give it a good spraydown and wait for flush #2...

Back when I started growing, I tried cakes and casing at the same time to figure out which was best for me. Let's just say I haven't done cakes since. Casing is easy, as long as you keep it from getting too wet. Mix equal parts peat moss and vermiculite, make the mix wet, put in a jar or oven bag, place in pressure cooker, sterilize for 30 minutes to one hour, allow to cool, squeeze out excess moisture before you apply to a tray of crumbled cakes. Peace.

I find that casings are far less likely to fall to contaminants - just get yourself some peatmoss, verm and a bit of shell grit to improve the ph, add spring water until its moist but not soggy, then pressure cook it until sterile...Do like Anima says, keep it moist and you'll get rhizos in no time.. Some people like to leave the casing tray wrapped in foil for a couple of days to let the mycelium start to establish, before placing it in a terrarium with humidity and fanning...

Thanks for all the info, I'm going to buy some trays right now. I'll let you know how it goes. Do you guys use a humidifier or not? What is the best thing to use for a terraruim?
