Use marbles instead of geolite?
    #4284547 - 06/11/05 07:48 PM (18 years, 10 months ago)

First time poster, long time lurker...

Quick question: Where I live I only have access to geolite online, so I normally use lava rocks. They work fine, but they are dirty and don't make a very level place for cakes.

I was just given about 20 gallons of marbles from a friend. He had them since he was a kid and I found them in his room and thought I might be able to use them. He gave them to me...

So I was thinking about using the marbles instead of the lava rocks / geolite. Other than the fact that geolite and lava rocks can hold a small amount of water/air in them, can you think of any reasons why the marbles would be a bad idea?

Just curious.

Thanks.

Well, as stated they can't be replaced for Geolite.  However, they do have a use.  Good one too.

They are used to break up the mycelium inside a liquid culture jar or baby bottle.

I've given up on marbles in my LC. They just go round and round and don't break up much. Marbles will do it eventually.. but broken glass works much better for me.

But you can always booby trap your room in case robbers... or cops are coming. Im sure if they don't trip over the marbles.. 20lbs of them falling on their head would do the trick.

Hmm.. 20 gallons.. thats even more to dump on their head.

I have to ask.. why would your friend think you could use 20 gallons of marbles to grow mushrooms?......

get some red clay pots, the kind to grow flowers in.
smash them up into 1/4-3/4" pieces, and viola, you have geolite.
