I love how this thread is vacillating between locking or unlocking itself.

True though, death isn't bad. We consider death and pain evil because death and pain threaten the survival of the individual organisms (IE you), but they've also been the motivating forces for evolution and change. If those not fit to survive didn't die off, we would've never evolved past primitive nucleic acids billions of years ago.

So if babies are continuously cut open and tortured, eventually, after hundreds of thousands of years and billions of babies, they'll evolve to have some neat trait like a turtle shell over their body or acid-spitting glands or such. There's nothing evil about this; one could even say its an essential part of the Tao.

And Stalin > Hitler in terms of being a "villain".

Er...may I point out that wholesale slaughter of infants would be kind of counter-productive to evolution in that it would cause the extinction of the human race if carried far enough....?

Anything would cause the extinction of humanity if carried far enough, but if some babies did survive by mutations then it wouldn't be counterproductive to evolution.

Really, everything that causes evolution begins as being counterproductive to it. Do you think the meteor that hit the dinosaurs was productive to their evolution? Yet through the mass extinctions and deaths, mammals and others became the dominant multicellular macroscopic animals on earth.

Not at all. Hitler lasted a few years, committed a genocide or two, then was taken out. Stalin did massacres and genocides at camps just as bad as Hitler's, and created a vicious empire that lasted decades.

the human mind and brain is just to complex for us to give a definitive answer... we can sit here and look at a persons life and try to believe its all cause and effect. but i think thats a little to simple most of the time. i think its chemical imbalances, that people are born with. i mean, we all have a 'chemical imbalance', there is no such thing as the perfect brain. and i'm not saying cruelty or evilness is hereditary just cause you are born with it either.

Hitler killed 30 million in a few years.  Stalin killed 20 million overa few decades.  This makes Stalin worse? 

They are the two greatest mass murders in history, so arguing over which is worse is kind of silly

If you include Mao, then your not talking about Stalin anymore.  Communism was probably more destructive than Fascism...  This sort of debate will go on for a long time among history enthusiasts.
