You played them? Liked them?
Which muds have you enjoyed the most and why?
2 I've played a lot were vampirewars and achaea. I've tried many others too but never got as engrossed. And by engrossed I mean life stealing. The enjoyment of these games is directly proportionaly to the effort you put in. Put a lot of effort in and it takes over your life. I've not played them for ages which is a good thing in some respects as it frees up a lot of time. However as with mushrooms, they're calling me back...
I allready posted this mud a couple times, but if you ain't seen it yet www.achaea.com Its the best mud i've come across, no stock maps and its absolutly huge. Crammed with detail, unique in almost everyway.

Dragonrealms for 4 years.
Gemstone III for over ten years.
I coded for Unwritten Legends when it was Realms of Exile, they were on the right track, but now they have a reps system now and totally fucked it up. And they fucked up my code. Ruined my dungeons/areas.
Bastards.

Is one of those a subscription mud? A friend said one of his mates lost his wife and job to one of the subscribable muds. Yes I know it sounds like a everquest story, but this guy is reliable
Do you recommend those muds you mentioned?

I played Dragonrealms for 5 years.. was the second highest thief in the realms when I left.. level 65.. then I walked the starry road (die without favors from your god and when you depart and ressurrect.. 1/3 chance that you walk the road and start over from nothing) and I got so pissed I left and never came back.
I started in beta, when it was only on AOL, and free. Then a few years after it got big.. they moved it to the web and started charging 5 bucks a month. Now it's like 15. Best mud ever in my opinion.. but I got so frustrated at losing my character I decided to never go back. I was so addicted. Took me 5 solid years to get where I was.. I didn't want to start from scratch.
edit: no I don't recommend you play either of those games.. because you will get extremely addicted, unless you have super will power.. and it takes a long ass time to get a good character.. especially now since there are so many high level characters who have been playing for years.

I had given my character Quinthal to a buddy of mine while I took a hiatus for a few months. He sold my fuckin char, I remade.. was Finthen the MoonMage and Lko the Barb.
That's a nice rank layout.. lotta magic for a thief. I had one and it was hard as hell to gain any magic whatsoever, even if someone was teaching you well.
I spent a lot of time in Riverhaven, the two cities west and NW of Riverhaven, and at the height of my MoonMage (Quin) spent much time in Shard.
Allarsk, one of the highest warmages, is still one of my good friends. I don't recall ever crossing your path. But anyway, if you met Quinthal before chances are it probably wasn't even me. I let my buddy borrow him at like level 54.
Man.. all in all.. that's a REALLY good versatile character. Weapons and bows with crazy survival.. damn. I've known Barbs with less.
The only other high level people I know were Nightcrawler, Jacobee (or something like that - thief that always wore pink EVERYTHING), and.. dammit.. I can't remember the guys name. Phear, maybe? Always hunted rock guardians with me north of the Crossing and those ghosts right after the Southern Crossing ferry.

Yeah survival requirements for thieves gets insane past level 40.. it's pretty much all survival and lore and weapons.. but I overtrained on hunting all the time, so I was way ahead in weapons and survival.. I liked my deadly thief. But oh yeah I got all those magic ranks a long time ago, when the realms were ten times better.. thieves could learn magic well by being taught and using magic devices. Thieves owned the realms secretly with empaths back in the day.. we had a tight-knit unit in the crossings. And GMs would regularly give out super RP awards for good roleplaying. Then it went to web.. they started charging.. tweaked everything to hell.. and it slowly got worse and worse over the years. I spent most of my later years alternating between Shard and Riverhaven and Theren.
I think I remember Quinthale.. and yeah Cardinale was one of my buddies. I hunted a lot with Nelf, and Shaydee..Purloin..the old school thief crew.. We even had a clan back in the day.. Army of Urrem'tier. And I knew Phear pretty well also. You remember Parseus and Apu.. the highest traders.. I was friends with them.. so that helped.. heh.. they would pay me like 30 plats to protect them on huge runs, and I could steal from pretty much anyone in the game without ever getting caught.. So that supported my double string crossbow and cloak collection. heh. But oh man so many names.. moon mage eh? Do you remember Gailien.. or Cription.. he was my good friend IRL.. and another friend was Heldiee. But they stopped playing a couple of years after it moved to web.

I remember Shaydee and Nelf.. Nelf was the coolest guy. Don't remember Gailien or Cription, though. Probably past my time.
I never talked to the other Moon Mages much, they were all stuck up losers. Most of my training went into lockpicking, light crossbow, hiding, medium weps, parry, and evasion. I used most of my magic for teleporting and TkT, but then TkT got nerfed.
I was a pretty good MoonThief

yeah the high level moon mages were pretty stuck up losers.. and boy do I remember the days of powerful tkt.. I had a pet moonie on a separate account that used to follow me around.. and he could pulp heads with one 10 mana tkt using a wolf pelt or something. Heh I even had a pet empath on another account, and I'll admit.. I used to afk script with all three of them.. that's partially how I got such high survival and lore. But that was in the glory days of DR.. long gone.
But those were the days when thieves feared war mages and moon mages.. I lived for PvPs. I was well known in the community as one that robbed people blind.. so I got attacked a lot.. heh. Paladins especially hated me. We used to have epic battles on the ferry to haven.. with like three thieves and three warmies.. all casting lightning on us with their etheric shields.. we would be bleeding to death but still manage to backstab one and kill them.. shoot a bolt and kill another.. fun times. But I wised up and eventually started carrying four loaded heavy crossbows in my backpack.. and wore one.. so in a pvp no one stood a chance.. remove cross, fire, stow, get second cross, fire.. until they made it so you couldn't put a loaded crossbow in a pack.. :mutter:
They nerfed TkT.. they tweaked magic down tons.. they tweaked down thieves stealing, and put caps on it.. they tweaked down everything. You used to be able to grab 50 plats in one grab.. back when 50 plats was a ton of money. there was no limit. Man, I remember going to one of the first festivals and I only had like 5 plat to buy stuff.. my life savings. I got 3 double-string crossbows for a plat each, a milady's cloak for 5 gold, and a shimmering hooded cloak for a plat. A few years later I end up short on cash so I sell a double string for 200 plat.. miladys cloaks were going for like 100. Crazy shit. Oh and I had one of those old backpacks, and an old hackersack.. that was literally bottomless. You could fill it and fill it and fill it, and it would never get full.. of course you needed to be strong enough to hold it. Someone offered me like 1000 plat for one and I said no no no.

I used to play Moongate and then it was turned into Materia Magica due to copyright stuff. It's by far the best MUD I've ever played.. I got to level 240 and then I quit playing. There's like one level higher than that but you have to do this long quest which takes a lot of time and I had just gotten my license so I started to go out and neglect the game at that point..
You should check it out. http://www.materiamagica.com

Not entirely, but it's a pretty awesome client nonetheless. I used to use zMUD when I seriously played Materia Magica because I could set triggers, pre-set paths which made travelling between towns a breeze, and lots of other cool stuff.
