The reason I ask is because I have a Sysnet BEFSX41 router for my cable broadband connection and according to the guide I found for my router at http://www.portforward.com, I am unable to use port forwarding unless i assign a static IP for my system. Soulseek listens on 18098 so I believe i have to use port forwarding to open that port, but I am not sure.
Basically, I am not sure how to open port 18098 with my current setup. Soulseek sees that port as "closed". Any suggestions?
You should have a static IP for as long as your cable has a connection. However, your router also assigns a dynamic IP, usually in the 192.168.1.* range, each time your NIC connects to it (basically each time you boot your PC). So this 192.168.1.* local IP will change but you can disable the local DHCP and assign a static local IP. If you go into your router settings you can do this. Just type 192.168.1.1 in your web browser and it's usually the first page of settings.
I use port forwarding for Soulseek using this method without a problem.
