 How do i get an IP from an email?

A friend of mine was recently robbed by his roommate. The bastard took his safe which held quite a large sum of money and fungi among other things. We've recently found he's been staying a state away. After a few hollow death threats passed along to his friends about crack heads hunting for his ass, he's been sending emails explaining he's sorry it wasn't his fault [bullshit], he lives in CA now [more BS], and please call off the KOS (kill on site). It's apparent that he's scared which makes us believe he's still very close. All we have to go on are the emails. How do we go about pulling the IP off of these and what is a good program to track it back to his service provider? We have friends all through out the state in which we think he's hiding we just need the town. If anyone wants to help me out personaly I'll be happy to IM his email to you. And don't worry about the kill on site, we aren't the thug type to do that. We just want the shit back.

Very Simple 
You can find his IP address in whats called the "Header" of the email. Are you using Outlook Express to view your mail? Or some web based email? With either one, look in the "Preferences" section and most of the time all you have to do is check a box that says "View Headers".
Thats it.
As for tracing an IP address, do a search for a program called "NeoTrace" - http://www.neotrace.com/
You may also use a program called "McAfee Visual Trace"
From McAfee's site...

Yeah there are programs that do a trace. (i got a small decent one if you need it). Windows comes with a trace command.
This will tell you where the ip is comen from and the service provider. Most ISP's wont give out anything personal though i believe.
If you find the fucker. Stomp on his head thieves are fucken bullshit.

I'm curious on an update too.... how are things going?
And Moe.... Ok, but I don't mind if you have a wife. For security purposes it would probably be best if the 3 of us stuck together and stayed "as a group".
