    #4161730 - 05/11/05 12:14 PM (18 years, 11 months ago)

One second firefox is working fine, it has all my bookmarks and extensions then I restart the app and everything is gone!! OMFG!

I had bookmarks from 6 years ago that were very hard to find, I had a wish list... Lets just say I lost ALLOT this is a very scary and sad day.

Has anyone had this issue? If so please tell me if you fixed it.

thanks :frown:

Woohoo! I fixed it!! Im running XP so I tried a System Restore and for some reason Firefox was restored back

Anyway don't let this happen to you backup your bookmarks

EDIT:
P.S I think norton caused the issue cause it updated just before I had a issue with firefox. And the restore point was named norton driver update or something.

Anything but norton...

... try avg antivirus from grisoft. It's a bit of a wierd application, but once you figure out how to do scans it's much better than norton and it's free.

That's good that you were able to get your bookmarks back. I've never used windows xp's system restore and I'm not planning on it. Careful what you use it for. Some people get a bad virus, do like 10 system restores and wonder why the fuck their pc won't boot. Jeesh.

I should back up my bookmarks as well. Thanks for the reminder. :stoned:

yeah, be sure to always back up your bookmarks. easy to do in firefox: bookmarks>manage bookmarks>file>export

as for antivirus, I have AVG installed, although I have disabled its startup because I really dont need an antivirus running 24/7 - I know not to open up strange files that end up in my email inbox & p2p incoming folders - and I never download weird shit from porno sites. If you are smart, you dont really need an antivirus. I have only gotten infected once, but that was because I infected myself on purpose.

I do periodic scans, however.

If you are smart, you dont really need an antivirus.

It isn't necessary to open an email attachment to get a virus. Security flaws in the browsers (yes, including Firefox) can introduce a virus simply by viewing a URL.

IE is notorious for this, but the recent spate of 'critical' security updates to Firefox demonstrate that you're not safe with either browser.

Unless you're using Lynx, you need good anti-virus software running all the time.

I run Norton 2002 its not bloated. I have worked on computers with newer versions and found they demand allot of memory and CPU. I have tried AVG and dislike it. I have tried to clean out systems with viruses using AVG and it finds them but then I have to do all the reg-edits and all the other stuff myself.

Norton 2002 keeps my system clean, and I'm not 100% sure if it was the cause of losing my bookmarks. Just no way to tell

I have NEVER got an virus from a EMAIL!!! "It isn't necessary to open an email attachment to get a virus." Very true, But since I do need to open attachments I scan all of them with Norton saved my ass 3 or 4 times from a mess. i have also been saved from viruses from viewing web pages while using Norton, one of the main reasons I use it

well, I suppose that might be true. do you know what known viri firefox is susceptible in this manner? I've never heard of firefox being vulnerable to this sort of attack. Isnt ActiveX necessary for this to happen, though?

Regardless, I've been running anti-virus free for about a year now and I dont think I'll run into any trouble - I am the only one who uses this computer and I really dont go to sites that would have such problems (porn, cracker/warez, etc). I am pretty much always aware of what services are running (using simeter). And if something were to happen, I am two clicks away from having AVG up and running as well as the Stinger.exe tool from McAffee.

I dont necessarily recommend this to others, but I do trust my actions online.

those kinds of vulnerabilities are why you would want to use a browser where you can disable [and it is disabled by default] instalation prompts and why you don't go from a trusted site with session cookies to a non trustworthy one directly.

yeah, I've seen that before. When I had 1.0.3 I never had javascript enabled, and I have since upgraded to 1.0.4 - and still do not have javascript enabled. If I need it to, say, install extensions or whatever, I'll turn it on - other than that it remains disabled 24/7. I also have "allow websites to install software" disabled 24/7 - unless I am installing extensions (always from mozilla foundation or http://www.extensionsmirror.com). I recommend people doing the same - no need to have these enabled at all times. They can easily be enabled when necessary.

There will always be bugs/vulnerabilities - good thing firefox is opensource so that people can discover these flaws. Unlike IE, they will get fix ASAP.

I recommend backuping your bookmarks, deleting your profile
(most important step), and uninstalling firefox. download the latest and re-install. import your bookmarks.

If firefox suddenly deleted all your information, then something must be wrong. Most likely it is a corrupt profile.
