I just played around with it at first to get the feel of the thing and learn where everything is. There is no guidebook I know of which is better than just experimenting yourself. At first I had to remind myself to use tabs and other features but after a few weeks I was doing it automatically and taking full advantage of Firefox. You can also try looking for extensions, some are very very useful.. I recommend Mouse Gestures to start with, they can really speed up browsing and make it a more fluid experience.

Play around with Firefox and you'll soon be wondering how you ever survived with Internet Explorer.

yes, pick a cool theme. I like noia extreme.

get a few extensions. I recommend these:

adblock: blocks all advertisement
tabbrowser preferences: manages how your tabs function
ieview: for those few websites that suck/require IE.
useragent switcher: for those few websites that suck/require IE

for adblock, copy/paste this into a .txt file & import:

Quote:

[Adblock]
/\D\d{2,3}x\d{2,3}\D/
googlesyndication
us.yimg.com/a/
/\/buy_assets\//
/[\W\d_](top|bottom|left|right|)?banner(s|id=|\d|_)[\W\d]/
/[\W\d](double|fast)click[\W\d]/
/[\W\d]click(stream|thrutraffic|thru|xchange)[\W\d]/
/[\W\d]value(stream|xchange|click)[\W\d]/
/[\W\d]dime(xchange|click)[\W\d]/
/[\W\d](onlineads?|ad(banner|click|-?flow|frame|ima?g(es?)?|_id|js|log|serv(er|e)?|stream|_string|s|trix|type|vertisements?|v|vert|xchange)?)[\W\d]/
/(hot|spy)log/
/[\W_](b(an|nr)s?|jump|redir(ect|s)?|stat)[\W_]/
/\W(cy|r)?c(ou)?nt(er|ed)?\W/
/p(artner|ing\.cgi|romotion)/
reklama
/sp(onsor|ymagic)/
/top(100|cto)/

With this filter, you'll block 99% of advertising.

here are some browser speed tweaks that I recommend:

Quote:

browser.cache.memory.capacity : 65536
browser.cache.disk_cache_ssl : true
browser.xul.error_pages.enabled : true
content.interrupt.parsing : true
content.max.tokenizing.time : 3000000
content.maxtextrun : 8191
content.notify.backoffcount : 5
content.notify.interval : 750000
content.notify.ontimer : true
content.switch.threshold : 750000
network.http.max-connections : 32
network.http.max-connections-per-server : 8
network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-proxy : 8
network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-server : 4
network.http.pipelining : true
network.http.pipelining.maxrequests : 8
network.http.proxy.pipelining : true
nglayout.initialpaint.delay : 750
plugin.expose_full_path : true
signed.applets.codebase_principal_support : true

enter these values in by typing about:config in your address bar. If the entries do not exist, add them.

Wow, I spent about 10 minutes tweaking it to my liking and bang, I was hooked. I'm usually a sour bugger when it comes to switching to things I'm unfamiliar with, but an opera > firefox or ie > firefox migration is really very gentle. I was comfortable within the first day of browsing.

If you need me to, I can pull up a pretty handy tweak for firefox. It'll optimize your broadband connection and takes only a couple of minutes. Although I take no recognition for it, and it's something that some people can figure out on their own. In fact I think it may have already been posted here..

complete anonymous web surfing works well with firefox as well if you feel inclined. It sifts through about 300 anonymous proxies to find you the quickest. the latest version can be a bit buggy though, try and find an earlier one.

cool man.

I also recommend the context search plugin
get that
and then visit: http://mycroft.mozdev.org/download.html
and download whatever search engine you'd like

with the extension you can right-click highlight a word
and search with your custom search engines.
the search will open up in a new tab.

Firefox is awesome.
I recomend Nuke Anything extension too. This allows you to remove just about anything on a page by right clicking and choosing remove this object.

hey i've got a little question that's been bugging me... is there anyway to make links open by default in a new tab, instead of in a new browser window? i know, you can just right click and say "open link in new tab" but there should be a way to set this as default - i just can't find it!

Yup, tabbrowser preferences is the way to go. You can also middle-click a link to open it in a new tab.
