NIN and Skinny Puppy
    #4127942 - 05/03/05 03:47 PM (11 years, 8 months ago)

I have a friend who is completely bashing the nails because according to him Trent Reznor is nothing but a poseur who copies Skinny Puppy.

I need a good rebuttal. Suggestions?

I don't know what to tell the guy if he really thinks that....I just downloaded some Skinny Puppy and I think they sound quite a bit different than NIN.

imo NIN has way better music than Skinny Puppy(at least with the 6 songs or so i heard by em)

I would say this. "NIN does not copy skinny puppy. Rather, NIN does to skinny puppy music what kenny G does to jazz. To say NIN contributes nothing is wrong. Rather, he takes the good stuff from skinny puppy and contributes his banality to make an inferior product that isn't quite a clone."

Although from the sound of it that wasn't what you were looking for.

Here's the difference between NIN and Skinny Puppy

Skinny Puppy isn't songs, it's just experimental gothica. No verse chorus verse chorus.. It just jumps around like a mascara kid with ADD on speed. For every 4 minute Skinny Puppy song there'll be like one 15 second part where Ogre or whoever the fuck is the Skinny Puppy 'songwriter' accidently fits the loops together in such a way that is catchy and appealing like real music, but these parts don't last long and then it'll be off into some other weird combo of horror movie sound effects, mumbled vocals, and lowfi drums or some shit.

Nine Inch Nails up to and including the Downward Spiral is master songcrafting with in the industrial, goth, overall flavour. Most of the songs are catchy and appealing from start to finish, without any sort of cheesiness or repetitiveness. I won't vouch for the NIN catalog after the Downward Spiral but for the most part Trent's music is far superior to Skinny Puppy, which like I said isn't really music.

Skinny Puppy isn't songs, it's just experimental gothica my simple mind does not undersand.  No verse chorus verse chorus is around to anchor me, so I can't understand it.

NIN adds that flavor to their music the same way Madonna adds electronic flavor or Frito-Lay adds cheese flavor.  Most of the songs are catchy and appealing from start to finish, never varying from what I expect, and never challenging me.  Because I am simple minded, I don't notice any cheesiness or repetitiveness.  I won't vouch for the NIN catalog after the Downward Spiral but for the most part Trent's music is far superior to Skinny Puppy, which like I said isn't really music in the limited sense that I can understand it on the first listen.

See what I mean.  For people who's understanding of music is limited to verse chorus verse form, Trent Renzor is better.  To people who understand music beyond chorus-verse form, Renzor is teh suxors, as they say, and Skinny puppy is the shit.

Just like to people who can't understand dissonance and harmony beyond a major seventh chord on the subdominant, and don't understand syncopation beyond 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and, Kenny G is better, where people who get 11ths and beyond on any auxillary pitch of the tonic, and understand complex rhythms with overlapping hemiolas, these people might like Sun-Ra better.

Dude.  Renzor sucks as a creative artist.  It's just a fact.  Yes, you can relate to him and his music.  Yes, you understand it and are not overwhelmed.  Thats not cause his music is good, thats because you suck too.

I mean, it's one thing to say "I like NIN better then Skinny Puppy."  But, to say "NIN is better then skinny puppy" is something else.  NIN sucks.  Get over it.

Just explain to him that anything Trent did after Broken bares absolutely no resemblance to Skinny Puppy.

Lots of people like to run around saying that NIN is to industrial as Green Day is to punk. Regardless of how you feel about Green Day, that's a bullshit statement. Green Day never shut up about how 'punk' they are. In the last 10 years, I've never heard Trent refer to himself as an industrial artist. I'm pretty sure I've always heard him refer to his songs as rock songs, which is exactly what they are. Most of them anyway. He'll occasionally mention how he likes to borrow industrial elements and how of much of an inspiration industrial was on him, but I don't think I've heard him go so far as to say NIN is industrial. The press and dumb teenagers love to slap labels on, but that's their problem.

Also be sure to remind your friend that Trent is friendly with Ogre and they hang out. Doesn't seem to be any bad blood.

By the way, Trent's new album is excellent.

Sounds like somebody is trying to be so |337 by name dropping SP.
Obviously not much listening has gone in to this argument.

when you're watching television the higher brain regions (like the midbrain and the neo-cortex) are shut down, and most activity shifts to the lower brain regions (like the limbic system). The right hemisphere is twice as active as the left, a neurological anomaly. The crossover from left to right releases a surge of the body?s natural opiates: endorphins, which include beta-endorphins and enkephalins. Endorphins are structurally identical to opium and its derivatives (morphine, codeine, heroin, etc.).After just 30 seconds of watching television the brain begins to produce alpha waves, which indicates torpid (almost comatose) rates of activity.

just my two cents.

I think we just went through this like 3 times in a NIN thread a few weeks ago.

All bands have influences. NIN was influenced by some of Skinny Puppy's production techniques, and he's explicitly stated that "Down In It" was inspired by "Dig It". Trent's songwriting style is completely different, though. The bands are really nothing alike.

The simple fact that your friend is ignorant enough to bring this up makes a rebuttal not worth the effort.

Without skinny puppy = no nin. skinny puppy gave Trent his start and direction. if any one remembers trent just wanted to make dance music but then went on tour with SP then trents music life changed then came Pretty Hate Machine

I love both NIN and Puppy, and consider myself an authority on both bands.

Your friend would have been partially correct in 1989. As Metatrad said, "Down In It" is admittedly an imitation of "Dig It." But since then, Reznor has done nothing resembling Skinny Puppy. Reznor's approach has been to use electronics to add complexity to rock music. Skinny Puppy, on the other hand, is pretty much straight-up industrial and have never played rock music.

think about it outside of a listener viewpoint though.

i bet if you talked to the members of skinny puppy, they would probally tell you thier careers skyrocketed with the commercial success of nin. thier fanbase probally doubled or tripled after that reznor guy blew up. without nin, they probally wouldnt have fucked as many sluts or been able to buy those excellent pieces of gear that were used to produce the albums preceding the nin explosion that you enjoy (i dunno if you like em or not after a certain period or what).

regardless, it works in a circle. everyone wins. hate on him all you want, but i bet the skinny puppy guys or any other industrial band for that matter had no problem with the concert attendences or record sales after nin went mainstream.

everyone is influenced by something. you think skinny puppy didnt bite anyone or try to emulate a specific sound? were all the band members born deaf and all at the same time magically learned to hear and instantly knew how to make music? probally not.

nin isnt the first to do this. modern art bites off of modern art. it's a cycle, you see.

unless you are born and raised in a fucking cave and are cut off from all forms of media and record music based off pure instinct, then and only then are you truly "originial". otherwise, youre just taking ideas and theories from other music and putting it on media.

Skinny Puppy hand picked Trent Reznor to open up for them back in the 80's.. so skinny puppy thinks NIN is cool
