Shiitake Log Do these look okay? Pics!!!

This is my first attempt with Shiitakes and everything seems to be going good except for the retards. Is this normal for this strain? I assume all is edible and the mycelium blobs will be the same as the fruits. Any tips for preping these for consumption?

The Stems on Shitake suck... they are very tough. The caps is what you want.

they do, they also make tea out of shitake as it exibits anti cancer properties. Also an immune booster. The advantage to eating them is they have 5 different amino acids and a high protein content. not as high as portabellas but something like 20% +-

hey tahoe... i got those mutants on the one shitake block i did once.. had a 1 mushroom first flush that was BEAUTIFUL! bestl ooking mushroom i had seen.. 2nd flush was all mutants.. i believe it was the crappy little chamber i had setup for them.. maybe they werent getting enough air or something? shitake benifits actually from lower humidity then most.. my 3rd flush... well it was contamd by then so i did not want to put it in my growing chamber.. i just left it in my basement (around 60-65 degrees and relative humidity of 50-70..) with a plastic bag partially covering it... came out with really nice mushrooms.. like 3 of them.. still havent figured out how to get the really nice pinsets on these..
nice job with your log! i see they are growing from a white block.. cool! it'll turn brown and all and you'll be able to get at least 4 flushes out of it... keep updating and good work

Very nice grow.... I also had fruits like that with my first flush. They seemed to be growing like that when I was fruiting my blocks to early (when they were still white). After sweating and browning for 4 weeks the flushes had fruits with normal developed caps.
Homegrown shiitakes are the best tasting mushrooms I have ever cooked up.

doesn't look like you let the block brown? Not that i'm an expert but I thought you had to let shitake logs brown before you fruit them by basically just letting them sit.
