finch and flax seed
    #404844 - 09/26/01 12:58 PM (23 years, 15 days ago)

I've been looking everywhere and I can't find what finch seed and flax seed is. I want to try Ryche Hawk's substrate recipe but I need help finding these items. Anyone know where I can get them?

Finch seed you can get at wal-mart. I think Hawk recommends Pennington's brand. Flax seed I found at a natural foods store or health grocery store. It was with the brown rice flour.

The finch seed that ralphster uses is also Penningtons. It is all the same type of seed. The only kind of finch seed I could find is a mix of different types of seed. does the mix make a difference or should I keep looking for finch seed that is all one type of seed?

That's left up to you, really. I prefer a mix because it's likely to have a good variety of nutrients and such things. Just choose one that's mostly millet. Basically, as far as I understand it, "Finch Seed" is any kind of bird seed mix that's mostly very small seeds. I've seen about 20 different mixes of bird seed called "Finch Seed".

How does Pennington's compare with plain millet? That's what I've been using for my Pans, and it seems to work relatively well (thicker mycelium growth than with whole brown rice or any kind of flour I've tried).

I haven't actually tried just plain millet - right now I've begun a new batch on finch seed, vermiculite, and 7-grain organic hot cereal. I figure that if it's good enough for a vegetarian health nut it's good enough for my shrooms. I'm a big fan of variety in a substrate.
