Finch & Flax addition
    #4342844 - 06/27/05 12:01 PM (18 years, 9 months ago)

Greetings everyone. I've recently been experimenting with many different kinds of grain and seeds applied to different situations. So far, so good. I've found that an excellent alternative to using BRF in the PF tek is to use 1/4 finch and 1/4 flax seed ground up. Both of these are high in nutes and cause the substrate to colonise much more vigorously.

Finch seed can be found at any petshop selling birdseed. It is very common. Now, for Flax seed- it is found in regular chain-supermarkets (in the Uk anyway) often it goes under the name of 'Linseed'. Same stuff anyway. The likelihood is that if you live in the US, Walmart will do the Flax/Linseed and your local petshop the Finch. Good luck on your hunt!

Ive read about WBS in cakes. Can you grind up wbs and use it as a sub with the same ratio? Do you have to worry about endospores when you make a grain flour? Any soaking/simmering nessesary?

Well i believe that if not having allowed the endospores to germinate many bacterium would survive PC'ing and is very likely to make your substrate more prone to contaminations - the main process is ' rinse-> soak 24h -> simmer 20 min -> rinse -> PC (for WBS). Plus you couldn't make a flour with soaked seed - it would become a useless slurry. However, according to the author of the PF-Birdseed tek, he/she combines simply 10 min soaked WBS into a regular PF mix (with BRF) and seems not to encounter any problems. I would still question the viability though for the reasons mentioned above. Best just stick to the ground dry finch & flax; or when using WBS follow Doc's WBS tek.

Alien's Substrate is Da' bomb. Utilizes Flax, Finchseed, Long grain cooked brown rice and quinoa. Colonizes quickly and produces grade A potency (within constraints of strain of course).

Ya, i have always followed agar's tek. (very similiar to Doc's). I think i might experiment with your finch and flax technique though.

Good stuff  It'll work great
To Thasaman> If you want real A grade potency you have to combine grains with the highest amount of tryptophan and other environmental factors such as for how long you can prolong the incubation period before triggering pinning. Alien is good in theory because it has quinoa but is a very delicate mix and more effort than just doing rye or WBS where the  potency is just as good and the flushes are more abundant. Millet seems like a good choice, just bought half a litre today
