humidity gauges

Any recommendations on cheap and accurate hygrometers? The tips in the FAQ for calibrating them are welcomed, but not very useful if the ones I can afford only read to 80% RH.

LOOK HERE;

Real cheap ones are just that (excepting good bulb types).

Even spendy ones can F/U. If you get the wrong type.

Many novices buy $20 - 25 Digi at Lowes or HomeDepot. Only to realize to late, sensor is for temp only & place whole unit in container - so to have rh read-out. Then unit DIES after 4 days, as is not waterproof.

If you have BIG BUCKS.... look HERE:

Thanks, Agar.

But if I want any sort of reliable RH reading, the bidding starts at 50 bucks?!

$5 at Lowes / Home Depot is okay to start with (rh is about +/- 12% on the high end). Then - step up - when you can.

Good in $60 range is...... THIS ONE

Edit to add. If you can find the same one - elsewhere it would likely be in $30/40 range.

Thanks. I actually own that $5 gauge (one of the many I've tried) and NOTHING gets it over 80%.

I must confess I am guilty of this.  However, mine was 15 bux at Wally World, and after measuring the accuracy of it with a phychrometer was found to be pretty damn accuate up to 95% RH (I do casings anyway, so it doesn't need to even be that high), so I modified it to have a remote RH sensor as well.

If you have any type of electical skills, you can pop it apart and you will notice that the RH sensor is already technically remote, as in it is hot glued to the back and has about 4" of wire running from it to teh mainboard.  Just snip, splice in an extended amount of wire, solder, shrinkwrap seal, and presto you've got a remote RH sensor as well.  Just be careful when popping the sensor out of its spot as you don't want to damage it.  Lemme know if ya'll want me to snap a couple pics...
