Well darn, that just adds to my confusion. The gigs I grew had hairy stems,
are they not a somniferum? I recieved them from a reliable ethno site too...

The picture is from my collection. Bees and poppies make for some interesting scenes.
The encounters are rough, quick, and very messy.

P. Rhoeas has a much shorter and thinner stem than somni. I never seen one taller than 1 foot. The stem is much hairier than any somniferum. The flower is deep red. The leaves are completely different. The pods are much smaller, and elongated instead of round.

I took a couple of pics of a plant about a month ago. My camera sucks though.

The pic makes it look pinkish but the petals are of a strong red

There is no mistake possible. Rhoeas is pretty much impossible to confuse with somniferum when you see one next to another.

EDIT: Oh yeah, that pic is spectacular! Gigs?

Thanks esin, I think you cleared things up for me.
I guess I havent observed or encountered rhoes yet, all somniferum.
Which is why I can't tell the difference between the two - theres nothing to differentiate!

Gigs are the only ones I've grown. I hope to someday own a few different types for a very showy collection  :smirk:

They aren't the P. Rhoeas that grows wild around my parts. They however may be a dmesticated variety with different colors.
