Check out Hongus` Casing Tek at mycotpia.net. It doesn't get any easier. You might want to buy some latex gloves if you haven't allready.

Let your jars colonize a little longer.. and crumble your cakes in a zip lock bag. I had this problem when I was over anxious before too. The mycelia will crawl along the glass first and sometimes it won`t be colonized in the center of cake. This should help.. hope it does for you.

pasturize verm+peat moss (50:50 ratio) for 2 hours, let cool, then case.

horse or cow poo
personally horse is my shit of choice
stick it in a cloth bag of some sort and boil for 45 minutes
squeeze excess water out and throw on top of crumbled cakes, works wonders

oh and take the shit juice that you made from boiling and use it in place of the water for your next brf cake also works wonders

Hi,

well, an addition to the methods used by the others:
1) use soil for plants, the one you buy at the gardening shop.
2) Moisture it well, just before it becomes mud.
3) Nuke it 10 min in a tupperware in your microwave oven at the highest power.
4) let it cool down in the closed tupperware and moisture it again just before saturation (if you have mud you went too far!)

I have excellent experience with this method. The differences to other casings like vermiculite + etc. is that the soil for plants originally contains a high amount of beneficial microorganisms (Pseudomonas, etc.) The 10 min in the microwave is like a pasteurization, so it kills only temperature sensitive organisms like insect eggs and many molds. The beneficial microrganisms survive the pasteurization and protect it from contaminating in the future.
Once you prepared the soil it can be stored in a tupperware for many months, if not even longer without contaminating.
The pH is also in the correct range for many species. It is important that you don't nuke it too long, or you will also kill the beneficial microorganisms.

I use a simmilar method as Elektrolurch:
I use Jiffy Mix from WallMart. It is a blend of vermiculite, peatmoss, and lime for proper ph. I then nuke mine for 8 on high. Then let cool and case.

I use the Jiffy mix. It has a pH reading of 6-8, which is just right. It already has additives to control pH. I mix in some perlite and vermiculite at a 1:10 ratio. I use a layer of verm on the bottom. Nuking the dirt will kill most everything in there. Cubensis is not dependent on the microorganism population. According to Stamets, only a few species are. And P.C. is not one of those. Hope that helps.

heres one with terrerium and all:
cut a 2 liter bottle in two, like "ultra-poor mans" terr tek, eletric tape over the outside of the bottom so no light gets in. put holes in the bottom (lets out stale air). put in a layer of wet verm with peroxide, then crumble the cake on top of that, then put a layer of wet verm (or jiffy mix) on top of the crumbled cake. you get the idea, just a single cake casing inside its own terrarium. works well.
