anyone ever grown granadilla from the grocery store fruit?

i bought a couple grannadillas at the store...i cant for th elife of me remember what type...they had starfruits, these, passionfruit (which i have recently learned is teh same name for a grannadilla, but these are way different), dragon druit, thsoe things steve irwin feeds teh prego orangatang and a couple other funky named fruits.

i chose this one and will likely try the rest....but at tehse prices i had to limit myself.

anyway my eye is on you prisoner...or anyone else that knows about fruit trees. heres some pics, and if you read this in the next 5 mins i will be posting a pic of the inards/seeds in a min.

thansk for any input.

now that i open it...not sure how to eat it...im sucking on the seeds adn its pretty "tropial" tasting.

Very cool, kada! I have never seen this guy before. Thanks for showing me a new exotic!  :grin:. It almost looks like a passionfruit variety to me. Just look at those seeds. I'm gonna do some more research.

Kada you should most definitely try the dragonfruit. It is very very rare to find them and I think they are quite delicious. I would pay a very handsome price for one  :wink:

they are $7 plus tax EACH here! which is why i did not get one...you got any tips on sprouting dragin fuit? any idea how many seeds in a fruit? lots, few, one?

this store (its called Thrifty Foods and is on Vancouver ISland, bc should anyone care) jsut recently got a bunch of exotic crap in....they also have been supplying many species of mushrooms this last winter...tehy certainly try and strive for good variety in their plants/fungi.

i ate most of those seeds, but if you want some im more than happy to send you some....in fact they almost look liek they are sprouting already...inside the fruit! whack....

I would not blink at that price. Like I said they are extraordinarilry rare. I think there are a few hundred seeds in each dragonfruit, but I could be wrong. Dragonfruit is actually the fruit of a cactus and is said to have the texture of kiwi. I would be interested in some of those seeds. And yes they do look like they are germinating!

I picked up a dragon fruit today, thanks to atma. i will be trying to grow these as it is said to not be too terribly difficult. they tasted really good! finally an exotic fruit that isnt deathly sweet.




i got maybe a couple hundred seeds from the sucker...i ate half and seeded half. i would not doubt if there were thousands in tehre....but they are SOOO hard to get on thier own, that fruity pulp crap jsut likes it way too much...


damn i bad at names. they had these that i remember plus a couple more. pasionfruit (not liek the one above), these, rambutans, cherimoya, starfruit, and the usual varieties of papaya/mango etc...

here is the seeds i collected...they probabyl wont be dry till tomarow. tehy remind me of aquatic sally/frog egg masses actually.

teh fruit was nice. it was very kiwi like. it was not at all like watermelon but i had to think of watermelon when cutting it. you know when you press on watermelon and it goes all watery....these seem to do that to a lesser extent.

Dragon fruit comes from Hylocereus undatus, and you can buy cuttings at every garden center because H. undatus is the stock plant for moon cacti.

Simply cut off the red Gymnocalycium mihanovichii scion and allow the stock to grow on its own. H. undatus is a voracious grower and has marvellous white flowers.
