Food agency expands warning on brand of assorted mushrooms in oil

Canadian Press

Friday, March 25, 2005

OTTAWA (CP) - The Canadian Food Inspection Agency and Les Aliments Valli Foods Inc. are warning people not to eat Valli brand Assorted Mushrooms In Oil described below because it may be contaminated with the bacteria responsible for botulism.

In a press release issued Thursday by the food agency, officials said the warning expands on a previous alert issued Tuesday on the same product.

The earlier alert said the affected product was distributed in Ontario and Quebec. Thursday's statement said it has been distributed nationally.

The affected product, Valli brand Assorted Mushrooms In Oil, is sold in a one litre glass jar bearing UPC 0 69413 17950 5.

The following 21 codes of this product are affected by this alert: CHA11464127, CHA12524127, CHA12964127, CHA11694127, CHA12624127, CHA13004127, CHA11874127, CHA12654127, CHA13314127, CHA11944127, CHA12694127, CHA13354127, CHA12154127, CHA12764127, CHA13424127, CHA12194127, CHA12824127, CHA13554127, CHA12514127, CHA12864127, CHA13584127

The manufacturer, Les Aliments Valli Foods Inc. of Montreal, is voluntarily recalling the affected product from the marketplace.

Botulism is a life-threatening illness caused by the build-up of toxins produced by Clostridium botulinum bacteria.

Food contaminated with C. botulinum may or may not look or smell spoiled. The product should not be consumed by humans or animals. There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of this product, the agency said.

The food agency is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.
