Man arrested for selling mushroom chocolates

A Weston man faces felony charges after police found 4.7 pounds of chocolates laced with hallucinogenic mushrooms Thursday night at his home.
Travis J. Bruch, 22, 2807 Sternberg Ave., will have a preliminary hearing May 5 in Marathon County Circuit Court. A $2,000 signature bond was set.

Bruch is charged with possession with intent to deliver more than 500 grams of psilocybin mushrooms, and possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. If convicted on the psilocybin charge, he could go to prison for 15 years and pay a $50,000 fine.

Police found $6,000 in cash and $1,000 worth of marijuana at the home, said Stevens Point Police Sgt. Mike Retzki. Stevens Point police were involved in the arrest because information on Bruch was developed from Stevens Point sources, he said.

The molded chocolates were stamped with butterflies and anchors, and some were shaped like basketballs, Retzki said. The chocolates were valued at nearly $4,000, according to the attorney general's office.

Retzki said state drug agents suspect Bruch was importing the chocolates from out of state.

Everest Metro police and Marathon County sheriff's deputies also assisted state Department of Justice drug agents in searching the home.

Bruch's arrest comes after two Stevens Point men were charged in April for having homemade, mushroom-laced chocolates that turned up in a search of their home last November. In February, Wood County sheriff's deputies found molded, foil-wrapped, mushroom-laced chocolates at a home.

Within the past year, the Wisconsin State Crime Laboratory in Wausau has seen the chocolates in seven different cases from the northern portion of the state.

The discovery of the chocolates in central Wisconsin raised concerns among law enforcement agencies that people would inadvertently eat them.
