Petri help
    #3964709 - 03/24/05 12:16 PM (19 years, 9 days ago)

Is there anything you can put on top of glass petris that will withstand the pc? I have some glass petris but only the bottoms. I want something that I can put over them that will keep contams/water out during and after pc'ing.

Thats a hard one. What diam. are they?

Speaking of glass petri dishes, do you prefer glass over disposable ones?

I'm thinking of getting some glass ones.

I don't know the diam. of them, I just got them from a trade. I couldn't tell ya if I prefer glass or disposable by experience, but just by personal taste I would say glass cuz I can pc them and reuse them and not have to worry bout runnin out or ordering more

Wrap up in foil as suggested. Personally, I hate glass petri dishes. Wait until you have several hundred going at once. You'll have a ton of cash invested, then when you accidentally knock a stack over, half of them break. They're also heavy to pick up when inoculating and you need to lift a stack of ten. That causes them to slip out of your gloved hands. They're a pain in the ass to clean up and re-PC, while the sterile plastic dishes can be had for 5 cents each here http://www.cenmed.com/showDetails.asp?it...rchresults.asp. I seriously doubt you can wash and re-PC a glass dish for 5 cents. You probably only got the bottoms because the other guy already broke all the lids.

why not just do the petri(s) seperately and pc your agar in a seperate glass bottle then pour the agar into petri and put parafilm or saranwrap over it. If you do it in front of a flowhood or glovebox or if you just do it quickly, it should work.

You should always prepare the agar in a separate bottle, then pour into the dishes.
