LAva rock... Do you need the pump? Quicky ? *PiCs*
    #3960692 - 03/23/05 06:23 PM (11 years, 8 months ago)

Just wondering if straight lava rock in the bottom of the rubber maid with like an 1/4-1/2 inch of water would work to slightly increase humidity.. The thing is i dont want to run another fish pump into the lava rock to bubble under the rock.. I just want the lava rock and water... nothing more.. I already have a Tropicaire Air exchange/Humidity system with a pump that takes care of most of my humidity problems but would like just a little extra..

Also, for heating, does anyone have a link to a Tek with a fish tank heater in it? I was wondering the styles of this...like putting the entire jar with water and heater in the rubber maid.. I dont know, what is best..

Sorry, this Quick question turned into a bit more then i thought it would... Thanks alot!

yes, but not a bunch. 5 inches of lava rock + 2 inches of water is what i use.

why not use the other pump in the lava rock, it will accomplish the same goal providong air exchange and humidity

Because the other pump is being used for the external air exchange system.. There would be no need to have the pump in the bottom. I was just wondering if lava rock without the pump helps increase humidity a little bit.. I might not even need it.. I am conducting a test right now. If i get humidity to stay consistantly in the 90's i wont use lavarock at all. If it doesnt quite make it, lava rock will be used. If i dont use lava rock should i just set a screen or something on the bottom--Chicken wire.

Yeah, for sure... In a bit ill take some pics of my setup.. Looks like I wont be using the lava rock.. The air exchange system is pushing in the 90's :-) Currently I am experimenting with heating and eventually need to find a more space effective way of heating... Im guessing ill be suspending the jar of water from the lid or something... I dont know, right now it is a lot of weight to be hanging from the lid.... I dont know, ill take some pics and have them on here in 10 min or so... Then you can tell me..

Ok, it is a little hard to see but there is a fish tank heater in a large jar in the middle to try to get the right temp. The Meters say the humidity is 96% on one of them and about 90 on the other. If humidity gets to high what should i do? throw a timer on it? I have a digital one so that would be no problem.
