It depends on what athlon CPU you have. Look on athlons site for the operating specs.

100-120 what?

If you search google

http://www.google.com/search?q=amd+athlon+data+sheet

you will find several data sheets.

My athlon 1800+ runs at 56?C.

I try not to let my athlon xp 2500 run too much over 50C, even though it's overclocked like a mofo...i have the settings on 12.0x200. even if you're not hitting the max die temp, the higher the temps, the shorter the lifespan of your CPU.

Well, actually CPU's can stand temperatures above 90 Celsius. Normal operation is at lower temperatures and it ensures a long life. Hysteresis temperature is normally the limit where the electrons begin to "jump" between connections, most probably it will just crash and automatically get turned off. It depends on the model, but nowadays if it gets well above 100C and remains turned on, it will probably melt.
Anyway, read this

I have a prescott Pentium 4 CPU that runs at about 57 C while idling and will go right up to about 75 C under full load. Most systems that I have seen with an auto-shutodown feature don't start to shut dow until the 90-95 C range.

In any case, the chances of you pushing your CPU to its thermal limits are VERY slim provided you have a heatsink/fan attatched to it. Most new CPU's will either throttle back the clock speed when the temp gets too high, or will just shut down the entire computer. This should happen LONG before you get into the real danger range of temps. I expect total thermal failure would occur at temps above 150-200 C, and have seen videos of chips burning to a crisp at over 300 C (thank you, Tom's Hardware!) but that required removing the heat sink WHILE THE CHIP WAS UNDER FULL LOAD, which isn't something that should EVER happen under normal operation.

what kind of HSF and thermal compound you have on there trendal??? your stuff shouldn't be getting that hot if you can prevent it at all man. surprised you don't get a whiff of melting plastic every now and then.

The Prescott core has HORRIBLE heat problems, and nothing I have done has been able to bring down the temp by more than a couple degrees. I'm using artic silver heat paste and a blower-style fan/heatsink combo that moves a LOT of air. It runs perfectly fine as is, no stability problems or anything, so I don't worry about it.

It's the prescott. She's a bitch.

Yeah Intel's recent processors have serious heat issues. Most newer processors can survive high temps but integrated circuits run faster at low temps and processors are still easy to literally fry. It is best to keep temps as low as possible but newer processors are able to withstand temps upwards of 90C.

I have fried an AMD XP processor at like 70C but it was an older model and AMDs are made to run at cooler temps.

Didn't older AMD Athlons have problems with heat, or I should say didn't they run hotter than Intel processors? I'm running an Athlon XP 1800+ and a 1900+ which work great. I don't have one of the newest Athlons to test.

Naw Athlons have always ran pretty cool. The "heat problem" they had was if the heatsink fell off during operation, the processor was unable to throttle back clock speed before the whole thing lit on fire :smirk:

Here we go, this is what I was referencing. Don't get me wrong I love my AMD processor.

http://encyclopedia.laborlawtalk.com/Athlon
Quote:

Palomino

AMD released the third major Athlon version on May 14, 2001, code-named "Palomino". This version, the first to include the SSE instruction set from the Intel Pentium III as well as AMD's 3DNow! Professional, was introduced at speeds between 1333 and 1733 MHz. The major changes were optimizations to the core design to increase efficiency by roughly 10 % over a Thunderbird at the same clock-speed, and power consumption reductions to allow it to be clocked faster.

The "Palomino" did have one major flaw, however: it ran very hot. Its SMP enabled version, the Athlon MP entry (which was the first to carry the Palomino core, not the Athlon XP), was initially hammered due to heat issues with the Palomino core.

The Athlon XP was marketed using a PR rating system, which compared its performance to an Athlon Thunderbird. Because the Athlon XP has much higher IPC (instructions per clock) than the Pentium 4 (and about 10 % higher than a Thunderbird), it is more efficient and delivers the same level of performance at a lower clock-speed, or higher performance at the same speed.
