As a side note:

I also highly recomend the "Connections" series (the first one, not Connections 2) by James Burke that you can find on mvgroup. Burke has an amazing grasp of the concept of change in human society, and does an excellent job of showing how change occurs: unpredictable, yet intimately linked with every other part of our human existence.

so they're wasting energy in iceland more than the U.S. is. I find it hard to believe considering how wasteful the U.S. is. They must have air conditioned dog houses up there.

Didn't they try to pass a bill to drill for oil in Alaska RIGHT after 9/11, but failed? These fuckers sure are persistent huh?

For your information:

87% of all housing in iceland is heated with geothermal energy.
83% of the electricity in the country is generated using hydropower, and the rest with geothermal energy.

Legalize hemp/cannabis/marijuana.  Make biodiesal fuels, medicines, textiles, foods, and more for cheaper in an ecologically sound way...

But that's not going to happen because it's THE DEVIL WEED.

So they use environmentally friendly energy production methods to create the energy that they are wasting?

The issue was that they are using more energy per person there than any other country, yet their country isn't particularly cold.

Wasting energy is bad no matter how it is produced, because unless everyone uses clean energy sources, we can't afford the pollution caused by excessive energy use.

This doesn't make sense. If the energy is readily available and doesn't pollute at all, what's wrong in using it? There's more water power and geothermal heat available in iceland than than the Icelanders themselves can consume -and these sources are renewable.
Iceland currently only uses 9% of their energy potential (or something like that).

They are using more energy per person that any other country because energy is basically being offered to them on a silver platter, and they can use it freely without depleting it.

I see your point, and I considered that. But I must insist that unless everyone is using clean energy sources it is up to everyone to think globally and conserve energy, so that perhaps their excess clean energy they produce could be sold to other countries that do not have abundant clean energy sources. Then these countries would not require so much energy from unclean sources, and the Earth as a whole would benefit.

Waste is waste is waste

Due to Iceland being an island I don't see how they would sell their energy to other countries very easily. It's not like you can bottle and sell geothermal energy like you can oil...

It's not the same as where you can simply throw up some power lines going across the border.

then it should be converted to other, more easily transportable energy forms. Perhaps the hydrogen we were talking about earlier could be produced using their abundant clean energy.

Who ever said it would be easy or cheap to clean up what we have destroyed?

At least I'm coming up with ideas and throwing them out there, something should be done before we all die from some crazy weather shift or something as nature sneezes us out of her nose.

amen to that! and i'm still hoping it will happen... but it probably won't until we run out of oil... too much money is invested in oil industry to legalize hemp and use it as a source of energy... greedy bastards
