Re: Drilling in Alaska passed in the senate [Re: trendal]

It makes me appreciate the fact that I'm going to die. I'll take the possibility of ceasing to exist completely over living on the planet Earth forever!

I wonder if any other alien civilizations exist or ever existed, and if they dealt with their environmental problems, or killed their entire race for the sake of money, like us.

It easy. Get some oil in Alaska, burn it and boil some water with it, use a turbine to convert the kinetic energy of the steam into mechanical energy, use a dynamo to convert the mechanical energy into electrical energy, use the electrical energy to electrolyze water, and there you have hydrogen!

Yeah, water contains 2 parts hydrogen...but that hydrogen is not available as an energy source. First you have to strip it off of the oxygen, and THAT takes energy to do. Actually it takes MORE energy to do that than you will get out of the hydrogen you create.

So hydrogen obtained from water is actually an energy sink, not an energy source.

Yes, but that's no problem. We can use oil from Alaska to produce hydrogen!

Makes me feel bad to see how much some people have to say about things they don't know anything about. Makes me think of greenpeace.

If you want to watch a good documentary about what we are doing to the planet, I HIGHLY recomend the BBC three-part series "The State of the Planet".

they could just start setting up self-sufficient hydrogen generation plants along rivers that use the power of the moving water to generate the electricity needed to separate the water into hydrogen and oxygen, and to bottle up the hydrogen couldn't they?

They could, yes, but I would be very hesitant about doing such a thing as any time you damn up a river you cause drastic ecological damage to the area.

What's your solution for the energy problem? There has to be a better alternative before you can bitch

this is indeed very sad and extremely maddening, however it's not too late. they haven't opened the arctic wildlife refuge for driling, they voted BY 2 VOTES not to ban drilling in the arctic by sneaking it into the 2006 budget proposal...fuckin cheap shot..but this isn't over by any means. www.saveourenvironment.org they make it really easy to contact senators, so anyone who's been wanting to get involved, but conveniently keeps finding excuses not to, now is the time to step up. it only lost by 2 votes, and they will still have many more votes to go before drilling is actually permited. make yourself heard.

What's your solution for the energy problem?

We need to stop using so much energy and stop being so wasteful about the energy we DO use. I'm confident that we could DRASTICALLY increase the efficiency of our entire energy production/distribution/usage system.

Call me a defeatist...but I don't think it will happen. Not until some major catastrophy occurs to wake enough people up. We're all still too hooked on cheap, abundant energy supplies.

Some scientists are working on using green algae as a hydrogen source. A biochemist at UC Berkeley found a way to trick it out of normal photosynthesis and into hydrogen mode. I still think its not yet practical thought.
