Drilling in Alaska passed in the senate
    #3929129 - 03/17/05 04:46 AM (19 years, 16 days ago)

"Washington -- The Senate voted narrowly Wednesday to open the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska to oil drilling, a defeat for environmentalists who had fought the measure for decades and a major win for President Bush and Republican efforts to boost domestic energy production." - SF Chronic....

Way to go W, thanks for voting for Bush everyone, this is fantastic!

Sometimes there's just not enough vomit to express how sickening it is what the Bush administration is doing.

Annnnnnd I had a light saber and my friend was there and I said "you look like an indian" and he said "you look like satan" and he found a stick and a rock and he named the rock ooga booga and he named the stick Stick and we both thought that was pretty funny. We got eaten alive by mosquitos but didn't notice til the next day. I stepped on some glass while wading in the swamp and cut my foot open, didn't bother me til the next day either....yeah it was a good time, ended the night by buying some liquor for minors and drinking nips and going to he diner and eating chicken fingers, and then I went home and went to bed.

GODDAMN GODDAMN I SAY GODDAMN.

That's what we need, more oil to fucking ruin our environment even more so we are more dependent, instead of focusing on new energy sources, all while fucking up one of the last truly wild places in the united states.

If you have been to Alaska (I have twice) it is like having an ego loss trip, without any drugs. The size of everything is so HUGE. It is so majestic. Its the north American version of the African Serengeti. Do you see Africa trying to chop up there land, hell no. But we are going to tear it up. I hate this.

Is there a letter writing campaign i can join. If not, I'm starting one. This makes me sick.

I'm taking an environmental class. The world is in deep deep shit. If any of you have heard of a book called Red Sky at Morning by J. Speth, it's a good book to get an idea of how far gone the environment already is.

Direct statistics from chapter one of the book:
*a third to half the worlds forests are now gone
*half of the world's wetlands gone
*agricultural productivity of 1/4 of all usable land has been degraded due to overuse and mismanagement
*in 1960, 5% of marine fisheries were fished to capacity or overfished. NOW 75 PERCENT!!
*1/4 of bird species are extinct and 12 percent are threatened.
*24 pecent of mammal species threatened, 25% reptiles, 30% fish. The rate of species extinction today is estimated to be a hundred times the natural rate.
*there is 32% more carbon dioxide in the air
*2.5 billion pounds of toxic waste released annually in the U.S.
*damage to the ozone layer is harmful to the ecosystems of the earth, in addition to human health
*Industrial processes such as the manufacture of fertilizers and other human activities now double the amount of nitrogen transferred from the atmosphere into biologically active forms.

I don't really know what to do. It hurts to know these things. Speth urges everyone not to lose hope, and to get active. I want to join one of these environmental groups, one of these days.

There is no such thing as "hydrogen power".

Unless you can point me towards the mass quantities of hydrogen lying around...

A quote from the first chapter talks about the fact that once you learn about how bad the environment really is, you "live alone in a world of wounds." People aren't aware of just how much serious damage is being done to the Earth that continues to get worse at an accelerating rate, and will not disappear even if we stopped all industry.

I think we are firmly entrenched in the Holocene Extinction Event by now. Some estimates say we could lose as much as 90% of all species on the planet within 100 years :frown:

I like diversity. I don't want it to go away.

I had to look up holocene.

For anyone who's not trendal, holocene basically means the recent epoch.

Holocene - Of or belonging to the geologic time, rock series, or sedimentary deposits of the more recent of the two epochs of the Quaternary Period, beginning at the end of the last Ice Age about 11,000 years ago and characterized by the development of human civilizations.
