Vermiculite, scarce city!
    #3917709 - 03/14/05 07:57 PM (19 years, 19 days ago)

Been looking for some verm for a few days now. The only place that has it in stock has a version for grill cooking. There is one other place that has it, it's a hardware store (Blackhawk Hardware Inc, (704) 525-2682 if you're in Charlotte) but they are out of stock until Wednesday. I've called about 5 other places who either don't carry it or don't know what I'm talking about. One guy even said "I think they took it off the market". While I was at The Home Depot picking up supplies for my aquarium, I asked women in the garden section if she carried it... she looked at me straight in the eyes for a few long seconds and asked me what I was growing... I had to think for a while before I could come up with shitake, and then she tried to sell me mushroom soil(saw no mention of that here so I passed it up). But seriously, what's with vermiculite being so hard to find in stores? The BRF is the same!

MycoSupply sells a 16 quart bag for $8.00 + shipping. It's a big bag of verm. Just an option for you.

Ahh yes the sponsors... It's a very nice option actually, except I'd have to wait until the weekend to pick up any deliveries. Leasing office closes before anyone gets home =/

www.bewellhydroponics.com

Be Well Hydroponics
4732 Monroe Rd.
Charlotte, N.C. 28205

704-344-8010 (local)
1-800-982-2710 (toll free)

Shop Hours: Mon-Sat 10am-7pm

They have lots of helpful stuff, verm, geolite/hydroton, and coco coir. They have some other cool stuff but not really suited for mushies. Also hydro stores don't ask what you are growing, ever.

BTW, normally verm comes in a small bag, can't remember weight, for $5-7. All they sell is a huge bag for $24. Not sure if you want to buy that much. Will last forever. Saves on shipping and avoids hassle. You could probably call and ask them if htey can get you a smaller bag next time they order, they probably will do it. Here is another store listed for charlotte, no address or website though:

Meijer does as well but they are midwest only. Think Kmart might carry it. Wally does not. HD does not. Not sure about other chains. If you want to ask at a garden center in a store, say something like "You have soils with vermiculite mixed in, do you have plain vermiculite." They don't get confused by the big word that way :p
