Length of time to soak raw plant materials in solvent (ethanol, hexane, etc.)

How long should the plant material remain in the solvent before straining the solvent?

I figured that this is a question which many ethnobotanical harvesters have an opinion on. To begin I'll contribue my own experiences with ethanol on various plants (Skullcap, Calamus, Lotuses, Dagga).

At first I would run an initial soaking of only 5 minutes then allow that to dry. Most of the time this worked excellently and the extract when ingested provided effects. However running multiple soakings on the same plant material produced good extract 3-4 times so I have since switched to letting it soak for at least 3 days and usually a week before straining and drying to obtain the extract. However I have heard this latter method adds undesirable things to the final extract and that soaking should be done no longer than a minute.

What are your opinions or experiences on this subject?

Well i dont know who you've heard this from, but I want whatever they are on.



3 days is a good amount of time, 2 is fine too. I usualy go 2-3 days with LSA, DMT, Dagga, and other extractions. Also if you chop up whatever your extracting from into smaller pieces, it extracts better, and quicker - more material is exposed to the ethanol.

Fortunately being well-versed in intarweb I have communicated with the google gods. There seems to be no general consensus on time to soak, thus the thread. Good point about chopping up your herbs, I use the "gooify" option on the blender for that ;p

well...
depends on the herb, the solvent, the temperature, & what ya consider "undesirable"...

i have heard that a much cleaner product (THC-oil) from cannabis if it is only soaked for a minute or two...
but a lot of "active" remain in the marc...
of course, the secondary & tertiary & quaternary rinses can be cleaned up by various other lab techs - column chromatography, aq/organic phase washings, fractional vacuum distillation, recrystallization, yaddayaddayadda....)
