Does anyone have information on germinating seeds in agar? Especially nutrient mixes.

Eventually I want to get into growing orchids, but thats way down the road. I've heard of plants being started in agar to increase germination rates and to ward off diseases that attack many seedlings. I know you can use it to clone the plants using the meristem, but thats a little beyond my capabilities.

Don't waste your time with agar unless you have to. Plant material is harder to work with invitro then fungus. Contamination rates are higher, surface sterilization is required for seeds, etc..... It isn't hard it is just time consuming and expensive. Unless your are going to try to flask some orchid seeds, or germinate some fern spores I wouldn't waste my time. Starting invitro does not increase germination rate, that is related to seed physiology and morphology. Orchids are flasked because the seeds are like pollen, it is a dust. By putting seeds invitro you actually increase the chances of contamination.
