complete newb qeustions, that i couldent find in the tek's
    #3908714 -

ok so i have a few qeustion for all you cultivators
1.i bought two bags of vermiculite one was already damp and since i dont want to have any extra contamination risks i just need to know if i can still use it?...ive been getting mixed answers on the overgrow so i though id come here were the mush experts are
2.i went and bought some brown rice and put it to the coffee grinder, although i was able to grind it into a coarse powder for the most part, thier are still some chunks of grain(not big ones), and my coffee grinder is almost broken form constant rice grinding so will it matter if its not completely powderized
3.how long can i store spore syringes at room tempature(the woman doesent condone spores in the fridge)?
4.can jars colonize at 70 degree's farenhiet, and can you stack them on top of eachther int he incubation chamber?

hopefully ill get some help here....thanks all

Hi

1) You can use it, but should sterilize the damp verm (microwave, pressure cooker)

2) Yes, it makes a big difference. BRF needs to be completely powdered to diffuse into the cake and distribute nutrients correctly. Chunks will do no good in the case of BRF cakes.

3) Spore syringes can easily last 1 year at room temps.

4) Yes, but it will be very slow at 70F. Of course you can stack the jars.

u should try to grind the rice up more, spore syringes will last at room temp for a good while jus keep them in a dark place, and the jars will colonize at 70 but it will be slow

if it's not ground down enough the nutrients in the chunks will be inaccessible to the mycelium

If that's the best you can get it I'm sure it will work. But the larger chunks you get from food processors are pretty bad.

Why should chunks matter? You can use whole grain rice and it will work fine, why not half ground?

Doesn't work as well as flour.

Whole grain rice get simmered before being loaded into jars, and you end up with a texture that can be colonized by the mycelium. When doing BRF jars you need the powder to distribute among the verm/water for nutrition delivery. Big, unsimmered chunks of brown rice will do very little here. Two different applications there.

Ok, so it isn't that rice won't work, just can't really be mixed effectively.
