extending and improving shelf-life of prints
    #3902829 - 03/11/05 12:35 PM (19 years, 21 days ago)

I think it can be agreed that over time spore prints lose some vigor and become increasingly difficult to grow. Keeping them in a dark, dry place seems to extend their lifetime to five years or so. That suggests moisture and UV light kills them.

Is it possible that oxygen also affects the spores? Even if a spore is kept dry and in a dark place, it will still oxidize.

Because dry ice is so amazingly cheap (less than two dollars a pound) it would be very easy to place spore prints in an airtight container containing only CO2, and almost no O2.

I am willing to experiment with this idea, and would like your feedback. Do you think spores are damaged by oxygen? Do you think sealing them away in CO2 could keep them fresh and unchanged over many years?

Thanks for reading this; look forward to your responses.

well my friend, 5 years is a pretty damn long shelf life but all the power to ya if you find a way to increase it!

to answer your question though, i dont know. ive never even considered increasing shelf life. let us know how your results are then, im interested.

Possibly

I'd just try vaccum sealing them if you want to try for a much longer shelf life than 5 years.

I have some prints that are nearing the 5 year mark...they are kept in a plastic file box...in a dark, cool place.
I will be checking the viability of them in the next year...and following up on them in a semi annual basis.

good luck!~

you might be thinking about how agar stores his mycelium in sterile water.

that will last over a decade.

I do that too.

That vacuum bag idea sounds good. I might try that eventually when I can scrape enough cash together. In the mean time though I have quite a few 125ml canning jars and as I said dry ice is very inexpensive.

I guess the main prob is waiting that long, ten years or so and then making a syringe.

dry ice sublimates too. you need a damn cold freezer to keep that shit for long.

Vinegar + baking soda is a cheap method of making your own C02 if you have any lying around.
