Security status of privatly used forums? What internet security rules apply?

I have recently become a member of a forum of that which posts the information of uncommercialized events. First off, this board is not drawn out in the same way as this one. It?s not like we can just type in our e-mail address and gain access to the shroomery as long as we say we are 18+?.no, this board is supposingly very secure, so secure that it allegedly plays in the same (confidential wise) field as that of the encrypted e-mail services.

Basically, you need personal authorization from one of the top dogs (3 administrators) to gain access to this forum or past-present lists. It?s even hard to get wives and husbands of existing members to join this thing where inquires for access are most likely denied even after they are consulted in person and asked various questions for a long period of time. ( I have known one of the guys for 4 years and fianlly he lets me in after we have smoked bowls and bowls of pot and partied at other legal events)

I ask, why are we moving to forums when the mailing lists are so secure?.simply put, when there is a last minute change of plans in this scene, mailing groups are simply not sufficient or practical for spreading the information. Face it, the design of this forum and IRC is the quickest and most adequate way to obtain responses but the shroomery is a legally run board. The person who runs this (now forum) is still in charge of the lists that make there rounds but he is very eager to make his own private top security message boards.

So, I am asking now, how safe are private forums (you cant even see the forum title unless you are a granted member let alone view the topics) Its contracted through some kind of modification or Ping via a software program or something---the members were given these floppies at the last gathering (1 floppy per member per comp/ping?) the mailing lists are so jumbled up, they don?t serve there purpose but everybody knows they are the safest. The list are granted per member per person...no tag alongs when you attend these parties----honestly,its kinda like "eyes wide shut" without the masks and not all the chicks are naked.

Of the now 120/2540 members (who volunariy donate to this cause), all the topics on this particular forum are all security related. ?How are we for sure access cannot be obtained by the authorities? algorithm equation etc? type of thing---there are about 30 subjects none of which display any illegal or underground events. I would really appreciate if somebody could give me a run down of how the security 101 sticky (or any other info) applies to privately run forums such as this. Nobody has stepped forth as of yet with a rundown type of thing such as the stickies on this board so maybe I can be the first one?....Hell, Ill even paypal you a few bucks if the article is really good and detailed (Id like to make an impression for Im a newbie on this confidential board) ..plz help!

I dont know...and I dont know if they are "commercial boards". Not in the same layout as this atleast.

A friend and I developed software back in '98 that would allow unknown people to contact one-another securely. The system was based on 'karma' where internal relations were kept between people that know one another and scores changed based upon those relations. The scores were public and indicated how trusted a user was based upon who that user knew and how trusted those people were... kind of like trade ratings here, but much more complex. Relations were maintained or created as people in the system communicated. People in the system could rate each other or indicate if they had been busted recently or were feeling uneasy about somebody. Internally, everybody was simply a number with no way to identify who the number actually belonged to (for safety and security). We never released the system to the public because we were afraid that it would be used to pass child-porn.

I like the idea of that system. Seeing as nothing is impenetrable as I sated above. The system you are speaking gave you a good idea of who you could trust in general. What language was it coded in? Perl I am guessing?
