With the bust of the RC websites, it's worth considering software for annoymus IP addresses and Proxeys. Anybody have software to recommend? Perhaps we could make an internet security sticky for this board?

Wow, that seems pretty nice. Just a quick question, does it interfer with speed at all? I'm on dial-up, so I need all the power I can get.

The trouble with some proxies is they don't keep your cookies and you can't post or login a lot of places. Generally you have to pay to get a decent service.

Some proxies will slow up your connection, but the program I've mentioned above will actually list and keep fast proxies. So the more you use the program, the more faster proxies are used more often.

It seems Protowall doesn't allow access to Lana's link above.... Listen, I'm sorry to be such a noob, but what is better--Protowall or having a proxy set-up? I would guess that one could set up a proxy IP and exclude that in Protowall. God, I'm really *just* beginning to learn about internet security since I've gotten DSL. Any FAQ pages anyone could direct utter noobs to that go *step by step*, w/ definitions, etc. I mean, folks, I'm a fucking moron in this area. Thanks for any help!

Protowall is an XP service.... Good for hiding your download activity, but I'm not too familiar with it when it comes to how well it works with hiding an IP address.
I've never used Protowall so I'm not terribly familiar with it. But if there is an IP address blocked or a group of IP addresses blocked, you could have problems surfing through a proxy.

I used to use steganos, I loved it. Now that I"m using FireFox, though, I gotta find me another tool.
I highly reccomend ProtoWall if you do downloads. In junction with Block Manager, it's one of the best things you can do.

I installed the FireFox proxey manager, since it's the only broswer I use, and I have to say it's quite good! Very simple to use although I am getting era messages occasionally when trying to connect to different websites. It sends me to some strange website in Spanish that says it times out. Very strange.

Strange, I'm using the Anonymization.net proxy anonymizer for Firefox and it doesn't allow me to login to shroomery (the security code comes through as incorrect every single time).
I grabbed Steganos the other day but haven't given it a go. I'm checking out Jeremy's Extensions' proxy utility now.

I had problems w/Steganos, and a few proxy checkers saw through it. Ghostsurf is way better, but if you crank up the security, you can't log in here. A high anonymity proxy manually installed in Firefox works just as good and won't keep you out of sites, you just have to update it every few days. Here's a great security info site. http://www.grc.com/default.htm Try your proxy against Shieldsup. Thanks for the link, Bio, can't wait to check it out. Java is a security risk that can give you away even using a proxy if you have it enabled. Great thread, nono

Thanks again, Bio that's the best proxy utility I have ever used. Simple without other crap you have other programs devoted to (cache cleaners, spyware detectors, etc. ad nauseum) and extremely effective.
Consistently defies DNS.
Sweet program. I test it against Shieldsup daily since I got it cause I still get a thrill out of beating a proxy checker that saw through Stegano's AND Ghostsurf.
Bio's the man, nono

With SwitchProxy, is there a "standard" or default number of seconds one should select for staying at a given proxy? At the "Jeremy's Extensions" there's a proxy list link to the steganos site. I imported that list for use with Switch Proxy. Is this list as good as any other or should I be looking for a different proxy list? And, thanks everyone. Bio, you are an upstanding man--a soldier and a gentleman.

Until Bio replies, here's my 2 cents: I like 10 seconds for a proxy change, Long enough to start loading the page, but not too long before it refreshes if you have a slow proxy in the rotation. I use this proxy list manually entering the high anonymity proxies w/cut n paste. http://www.aliveproxy.com/ I have also read that if you are using a firewall, it's best to use the port 80 proxies. Do me a favor if you get the time and try the stegano's proxies against ShieldsUp here http://www.grc.com/default.htm and let me know how it works. This is the best proxychecker I have found.
thanks, nono
